Anything by Christopher Nolan and Tarantino
>>
>>
>>63503976
I have been hearing good things about Kiarostami for a long time. Didn't get the time to get into his films.
>>
>>63504060
I started with his last one, Like someone in love. I think it was a good starting point
>>
>>63504033
I enjoyed Prestige more than any of Quentin's flicks , but for some reason I respect Tarantino more.(even though they are both grossly overrated)
>>
>>63504129
mate I was pretending to be retarded

go watch some actual quality directors like tarkovsky and bergman
>>
>>63504103
Thnx for the recommendation.

Malick is a controversial figure.I don't know what to expect.

Fritz Lang is the OG and the best by a long distance.

What are some essential Bergman films ? Only saw Seventh Seal and Persona (really enjoyed the latter, didn't like the former as much but still good).
This guy has a pretty big filmography.

Is Werckmeister Harmonies a sequel of Damnation?

Why do you think so? The main character isn't even the same actor and they have nothing to do with each other

Wild Strawberries

It's sad to see that no one has mentioned Kieslowski yet.
>>
>>63504569
Tree of Life is one of the most divisive films. Some people say that it's a life changing film but others say it's shit.So Malick is kind of tricky to approach.
>>
>>63504638

For French directors, you can add Clouzot.
Also Kieslowski for European directors in general (Polish, but his last movies were financed by French people).
>>
>>63504638
One last thing I forgot that I think is important.

Jean luc Godard is specifically NOT worth studying. He's an academic that decided to pick up a camera. Most of his films are worth absolutely nothing. Nothing past 65 is worth watching even if you claim to be a Godard fan.

Don't waste your time with him.
>>
>>63504780
I can agree with those additions. I also would like to add in Lang.
>>
>>63504775
>others say it's shit
You mean teenage /tv/ posters? One that's actually divisive is To The Wonder, Tree of life is generally acclaimed.
>>
>>63504819
No Lynch?
>>
>>63504792
>Nothing past 65 is worth watching
Weekend is great. People love to hate Goddard, don't they? His early 60's films are amazing
>>
>>63504638
Satoshi Kon & Wojciech Has are great as well.
>>
>>63504638
For some time,I have been thinking about getting into New german cinema .Where should I start?
>>
>>63505129
Learn to speak german
>>
>>63504884
No. I don't think there's too much of interest with Lynch. Feel free to add him to your list.

>>63504888
Weekend is okay but probably the only of his films worth watching is Vivre Sa Vie, and mostly for technique, not because its a particularly good film. I have seen the majority of his 60s stuff and it took me a while to decide completely that there really is no purpose in watching godard because you can get most of what he accomplished from other cinema before he even did it. He's maybe the only international directorthat can legitimately be called pretentious without there being any counter argument possible or any redeeming qualities that offset that fact. Pure pretension for pretension's sake.

You'd be infinitely better served watching the movies of any of the other directors on the list above.
>>
>>63505157
Actually I am interested in learning German,Japanese & French.Hopefully it'll be soon.
>>
>>63505173
Lynch is one of the greatest American directors.
WTF are you even smoking?
>>
>>63505173
Goddard is pretty divisive, but i think the people that call him pretentious are taking him too seriously. His films are fun, especially Breathless and Pierrot le fou. If you're actually interested i'd recommend reading Brody's Everything Is Cinema, it's very insightful on Goddard and his work. At the very least you'll stop using the P word.

I don't get the filename but I like it. Patrician kino incoming. Anybody who lists directors without specific kino recommendations is a pleb.

>Mann
Thief
Manhunter

>De Palma
Body Double
Phantom of the Paradise

>Kurosawa
Stray Dog

>Woo-Ping
Drunken Master

>Lynch
Blue Velvet
Neon Genesis Evangelion (apparently)
Lost Highway

>Jarman
Sebastiane

>Pajaranov
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

>Schrader
American Gigolo

>Cosmatos
Beyond the Black Rainbow

>Jodorowsky
El Topo
Holy Memetain

>Arnold
Bloodsport

All of these are absolute kinography and I challenge anybody to dispute this claim.
>>
>>63505403

its very overrated desu
>>
>>63505439
>Kurosawa
>Likes Nora Inu

5/5 I don't even need to see the rest of your list.
>>
>>63505309
Yeah, I mean I've seen Breathless, une Femme est Une Femme, Pierrot le Fou, Vivre sa Vie, La Mepris, Bande A Part, un Femme Mariee, Alphaville, Masculin Feminin, Made in USA, 2 or 3 things I know about her, Week End, Tout Va Bien, Every Man for Himself, Film Socialisme and his newest catastrophe Goodbye to Language.

He is not a filmmaker with a heart of fun. What you seem to be implying he is is what Truffaut actually is. His films were made for the Cahiers du Cinema and you can tell his spirit about film and other filmmakers by his quotes about other filmmakers.

Also, add Herzog to my list above.
>>
>>63505491
Kurosawa created the seminal modern cop story but is almost exclusively remembered for his samurai and the sad pencil pusher. That seems like a shame to me. He did so much amazing stuff that there simply isn't enough respect going around to acknowledge every groundbreaking achievement he made.
>>
>>63505277
Lynch really appeals to some people and the tone he gets is very unique. I don't hate many of his films either. I like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Dune, and Twin Peaks but for me he just doesn't do anything really all that important for Cinema. He's equivalent to a fincher in my mind. An auteur no doubt, that has a particular tone that fits my mindset somedays but in general I just don't think there's too much to study with him unless you literally just want to emulate his tone.
>>
>>63505403
I can converse in 3 languages,it'll be nice to add to the tally.
>>
>>63505502
I can't convince anyone to like Goddard, all i'm saying is that if you really want to understand him and his work read the book, it's great.

>>
Another nice day, another bunch of retards shitting on Godard on /tv/!
At least this time, one of them claims to have seen large part of his first period, plus three more of all his other work. What amazes then, is the comical point that the whole man's work should be disconsidered as a piece of recommendation. This kind of thing stand for itself, there's really not much need of trying to criticize the 'advice'.
>>
>>63505862
400 Blows, Jules and Jim, Day for Night - Truffaut (which you've probably seen one or all of)

A Cruel Story of Youth, Death by Hanging, The Ceremony - Oshima (Though you may want to watch some Ozu, Mizoguchi or Kinoshita to contextualize his work in opposition to them because it directly relates)

Woman in the Dunes, The Face of Another, Man Without a Map - Teshigahara

I of course don't really know what exactly you are looking for though so Truffaut is Godard with much more Renoir humanism and much more focus on plot. Oshima is the Japanese Godard but with a much more intelligent set of critiques than Godard and much more innovative film-making than him as well. Teshigahara is nothing like Godard and that's a good thing. His films are at once traditional and avant garde. They're also surprisingly accessible.

Oh and watch Medium Cool if you want some american Godard but with actual meaningful messages about media politics and social movements (though you might want to study up on what was going on in 1968 if you don't already know. Hint: It's pretty similar to what is going on today])
>>
>>63506080
>thinking Godard's first period is all of the 1960s when everyone knows it's 1960-1964
kek
>>
>>63505862
Also, have you seen the films of Melville?
>>
>>63506156
>>63506246
Already seen Ozu, Truffaut and Renoir. Teshigahara only The face of another and Melville only Le samourai and Un flick. I'll check out the ones that are missing, but the ones that i've seen don't fill the gap Goddard does in my honest opinion to be quite honest.
>>
>>63506354
So, Melville I ask about because he was a profound influence on Godard, not in terms of style but for instance, in breathless. Godard showed melville his rough cut and melville was the one who told him that he takes too long with his scenes and that he needs to just cut to the good stuff. Melville is someone for whom Godard had an immense respect which is saying a lot seeing as Godard had respect for almost no one.

Medium Cool and A Cruel Story of Youth are where you should start.

With Teshigahara, you need to see Woman in the Dunes.
>>
>>63506517
I'll watch it F.A.M
>>
>>63503976
Iranian directors in general are GOAT, Majidi, Farhadi only to name 2 more.
Melville is a great director, Wong Kar Wai, H(ou)H(siao)H(sien), Qingshaonian Nezha is a good movie.
Check the not obviously bad criterion picks too, preferably Asian ones as they tend to be really good
>>
>>63504421
Just go with the "classics" you should find a lot of top lists. But as that other guy said, Wild Strawberries, fanny och Alexander etc.
