Many SG teams were for a more traditional Green Beret type special forces role. Light force, in and out quick, interact with the natives, collect intel, maybe blow something up, defend themselves when needed. Exactly: They cannot reattach limbs, heads or having their torso amputated no matter how fast they heal. Also the Genii operate almost exclusively at close quarters and rely on overwhelming force which makes the weapon almost ideal. Despite never being fired on screen it served it's purpose well, almost every time someone turns around to see them being pointed at them they say "oh fuck that!" and surrender.
