Tom Bombadil wasn't necessary to the plot, besides giving the Hobbits some sick enchanted loot, but he was a meaningful aspect to the world and he was written to show that there is a part of the world that is mystical and above all of this. Tom Bombadil doesn't care about to ring because he doesn't give a fuck about the affairs of the world; he represents a little bit of world building, how there is parts of the world, even the magical world that is completely unknown. This leads further into how by the time of the War of the Ring, Middle-earth is a lot less magical and stupefying then in the past.

Glorfindel is pretty beast. But in movie language that initial task of saving Frodo made a lot more sense to use Lady Elf. i can't fully remember it but basically i'm summarizing which will probably make a bunch of tolkien autists mad but
in the 1st age, when everything was like 15 power levels higher and the elves still lived in the Havens, there was a super OP elf called Faenor. Completely broken, good at literally everything, everyone wanted to suck his dick, was a MASTER craftsman taught by Aule who was the god of making things (made dwarves)
Back then the world was lit by two trees (also made by a godess) until the OG big bad Morgoth (Saurons boss at the time) set a spider to kill them. Luckily however Faenor had made these jewels that were literally the best jewels ever because they had the light of those trees trapped within them and these were called the Silmarils. There were 3 of them. Fearor begged Galadriel 3 times for a strand of her hair because it was said to shimmer like the trees but since she could read people she turned him down because she knew he was evil (he turned out to be p evil depending on your point of view)
Faenor had begged her thrice for a tress and thrice she refused to give him even one hair.
So the fact that she gave Gimli 3 for the locket he wanted to build (i think it was a locket) is pretty cool if you know the subtext
