Can someone please explain why this movie wasn't as critically acclaimed as it deserves? It's literally one of the best movies ever made.

I just rewatched this the other day after years. I always remembered liking it, but this time around the flaws really stood out. It's still a top notch bros hanging with the bros kind of flick, but they really should've played up the creepier elements of the cave savages, also there were a lot of gaps ("hey Antonio, you're joining the Nords" followed by 0.001 second reaction shot with no time to land, Antonio is all of a sudden a beast with a sword because he made it smaller, all the shit with the king/lord's son that goes nowhere).
Still a worthwhile movie. And yeah, watching a Spanish guy play an Arab was silly.

The script was not good, Crichton was a great novelist but a hack screenwriter (and in fact made more bad movies than good ones), this started as a movie called "Eaters of the Dead" and was in post-production for SO LONG that the director went out cast, shot, finished, and released "The Thomas Crown Affair" while this was still being edited.

The editing suffered intensely thanks to the infighting during production. Example: 13 guys go out but only 11 are actually counted out in Buliwyf's tent. Another example: 4 die during the first major Wendol attack, but only 3 are shown, so some faceless mook who was one of their vaunted chosen strike force perishes without ever being seen on screen. That kind of shit doesn't fly, and it's insulting as fuck to the viewership that such disregard for detail is even considered acceptable by a studio.
