What was the point of this scene?

To establish that he was a big guy

It establishes character and reflects Shrek's contentedness in living alone.
>>
they wanted to introduce us to that fact that Shrek wasn't just anybody, he was SOMEBODY

It was the exception of the fat ogre shit meme, and must be respected as such

But shrek isn't content with living alone, he's sad and scared that people push him away as he is an ogre

Not only that, but it established the whole tone of the movie. It wasn't a fancy Disney flick with fluffy Alan Menken musical acts. It's more "hip" with pop culture references and cruder humor.

It genuinely was pretty fresh at the time, but countless other CG movies followed it, including a lot of Dreamworks'.

I think that's why Pixar was put on such a pedestal. A lot of their movies came off as more "highbrow", and the Academy ate that up.

Character development, it's only after he meets Fiona that he realises how alone he is.

Have you seen some of the comments Academy members make about their films? Sometimes they don't even watch them, they just assume it's great because it's Pixar. That's why shit like Brave gets a nod.

They're considered the "highbrow" of western animation, for better or worse.
