Not only that, but it established the whole tone of the movie. It wasn't a fancy Disney flick with fluffy Alan Menken musical acts. It's more "hip" with pop culture references and cruder humor.
It genuinely was pretty fresh at the time, but countless other CG movies followed it, including a lot of Dreamworks'.
I think that's why Pixar was put on such a pedestal. A lot of their movies came off as more "highbrow", and the Academy ate that up.

Have you seen some of the comments Academy members make about their films? Sometimes they don't even watch them, they just assume it's great because it's Pixar. That's why shit like Brave gets a nod.
