Like anything else, 90% shit.
Just picked up this exquisite little piece of cinema
Overpriced entry level wes anderson bro-core hispter-core shit art X companyis better pleb shit
that should cover the rest of the thread
>>63447921
Some hidden gems hidden amongst the pretentious artsy french shit. Needs more recognizable titles besides Bay and Anderson. Also needs to put out way more horror.
Pic related is my favorite release, I watch it at least once a week.
Amazing label if you actually like cinema. The restorations, supplements, commentary, essays, etc add up to an enriching lesson in a box.
If the Criterion Collection sucks, what SHOULD I get?
>>63448106
Masters of Cinema, Arrow, BFI, Warner Archive
I don't care about most of the shit they release but when they put out a movie I love it's fucking awesome.
I wish the planets would align and let them release Star Wars.

What about Kurosawa?
>>63448238
/tv/ in a nutshell
>Have to watch a bunch of old Japanese films for one of my classes
>Torrent Criterion 1080p rips of them with subs
They've been good to me.
>>63448238
No, it's just that Criterion releases a lot of shit I would never watch and often does a poor encoding job. I don't give a shit about extras because I never watch them.
>>63448470
DVD- I can't find the company but there were DVDs released (not by Criterion) under something called the Kurosawa Collection that used the original posters as the cover art.
Blu-Ray- just use Criterion m8
>>63448568
It is literally the best quality you can get in a movie.
>>63448124
>BFI
I read somewhere (probably /tv/) that their releases are worse than the Criterion ones. Fewer extras for a start, but mainly it was some issue with colour correction?
>>63448586
You're still repeating this old chestnut? I have disproved this many times in these Criterion circle-jerk threads. It's like you just believe the hype without questioning it.
region B fucking when?
>>63448568
>often does a poor encoding job
love this meme
>>63448633
It depends on the release, really. No other label has put out so much Dreyer on BD, so they have that in their favour.
>>63448652
Are you that redux guy?

It's been proven.

I hope not.
>>63448699
Am I being a retard, or does the Criterion look much better?
>>63448699
Not only does the criterion seem fine, this reads as bitter and wasteful.
>>63448747
Move your face closer to the screen.
Also make sure you understand how this website works. You hover your mouse on/off the image.
>>63448747
Maybe you don't know what grain is?
>>63448633
To be fair, every label fucks up from time to time. There's the infamous blow out release, for example.
Are there any good American Horror equivalents to Criterion?
>>63448747
I'm with you.
When I look at the Criterion release, I see dots/grain everywhere. Someone pls explain how this is better.
>>63448962
>When I look at the Criterion release, I see dots/grain everywhere.
I assume you mean the non-Criterion?
I guess some people prefer a grainier image though, but I've never really understood that position.
>>63448962
Click on the top (small) image to zoom in somewhere, then compare them.
I think the Criterion release looks fine, but the Arrow one definitely has a lot more definition.
>>63448747
>>63448962
The Arrow has a sharper and more detailed look but is way more grainy. Criterion is blurred in some spots but looks "cleaner".
This looks like shit. DNR'd to hell.

A filmic image is composed of grain.
What are some good films to buy off Arrow?
>>63449125
What genre and are you American or Euro/someone with an all-region player
>>63449125
Thief, because you also get the theatrical cut along with better compression than the Criterion
Videodrome
>>63449205
American.
>>63449305
Already have Videodrone on Criterion
>>63449574
>Already have Videodrone on Criterion
Oops!
Anyways, here's the Arrow website: http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/
I hope Criterion comes through with Punch Drunk Love. Really needs a blu ray release
What should I go for if I'm not Region A? I'd prefer to stick to one label as much as possible causeit looks nicer on the shelf.I have a few BFI releases at the moment but they have a pretty limited catalogue.
>>63449779
Masters of Cinema and Arrow
Masters of Cinema is basically the UK Criterion, with a lower quantity of dross and a higher quality of encodes.
>>63451067
>tfw UK gets all the good SteelbooksI JUST WANT SOME GOOD DISNEY STEELBOOKS DAMMIT
>That one Arrow/Masters of Cinema shill who comes to literally every thread that mentions CC
I'm on to you friendo.
It's always the same screencaps too.
Almost as bad as the guy who shills for BN CC sales.
>>63451239
>bad
Were your feelings hurt when you had it pointed out that Criterion isn't the be-all and end-all of home video?
>>63451282
Shilling is shilling.
>>63451296
Okay, so I'll just say Criterion has competitors who regularly do a better job than them. Not naming any names, but you can figure out who they are.
>>63448443
>TT for sci-fi
Twilight Time is more "forgotten studio movies they don't care about enough to release themselves" than any particular genre

I have the Fuller and Mizoguchi sets. Is Allan King any good?
>>63451639
They're pretty damn good and their selections blows competitors out the water.

I guess being able to choose among the three(!) Ronald Neame films they have released is a big plus, eh?
>>63451870
I meant that I badly want them.

How's Artifical Eye? Anyone have experience with their stuff? I'm looking to buy pic related at some point.
>>63448443
>choose American, then Italian
American education.
>>63447921
Pretty bad encoding on their Blu-Rays. After all their super duper film restoration techniques they brag about on each releases' Features bulet points, they just HAVE to fuck it all up at the last minute with macroblocking.
>>63452129
Could you explain what's bad about this? Genuinely curious.
>>63452053
I looked at their list of releases and the most recent thing they have put out which I would watch are the two Monte Hellman westerns. >>63451990
I know Criterion has released Thief and Videodrome but I named those because the Arrow releases are superior. NB. I haven't actually bought an Arrow BD, only torrented them.
>there are people in this thread that are such plebs they're arguing for smoothing out film grain
nuke this board hiro
>>63452129
This.
>>63452180
A few releases over the past 6 months have had some artifacts or shit when you blow the image up 1000% and put your face into the screen, so every idiot is acting like Criterion has awful releases
>>63452180
You can look up on macroblocking but the gist of it is simply that instead of seeing well defined grain and detail, both of which very attainable on Blu-Ray, on most Criterion BD you just get big blocks of crap where there should be actual detail.
They've frequently been bested by other labels on the same movie, one of which is Arrow even though no one company is perfect but boy, Criterion just doesn't seem give a crap about the encoding. Release after release it's the same, ever present, issue wit the compression.
Criterion also recommend that you watch their blu-rays with your tvs frame smoothing mode enabled for that 'totally awesome high fps look'
annoyed that they're not multi region or ship to australia
more like shiterion
