I think it's totally fine to like the movie, even if you aren't a musician. But those same people should recognize that the film isn't entirely accurate - just as anyone who watched Amadeus should recognize that they didn't get a completely accurate history of Mozart's life. Some sacrifices need to be made in cinema to appeal to a larger crowd and to keep an audience hooked on the plot. In Whiplash's case it was the realism of the whole situation. But the message that the film attempted (successfully, I think) to deliver was done so through the exaggerated performances and plot. Beyond that, it has great cinematography, a stellar soundtrack, and good acting, so I think overall it's a good film regardless of the viewer's experience with music. But hey, everyone has a different look on these kinds of things.
