Got it in one. Usually, it was some kind of complicated plan to try to either teach a lesson or trick somebody or something - for instance, the cover with Superman burning Jimmy's gift has the plot that Superman was told by an alien that his son would die, and as Jimmy considered him a father figure, he decided to drive him away by being a jerk.
