Headmaster Trask really got screwed in that movie. All he wanted was to get the punks who trashed his car and humiliated him in front of the entire school. But the ungrateful protagonist would rather stick by the rich douchebags that make fun of him behind his back than the guy who was going to send him to Harvard. Then a crazy blind man comes in and rants and raves at Trask in front of the entire school. He is the epitome of a villain who literally did nothing wrong.

I think one of the main characteristics of Oscar bait is that the movie has to be fundamentally bad, made by someone who has clearly demonstrated they have little desire to do anything interesting in film other than make movies that have the vague appearance of being serious but only wear their thin gauze as a means of pandering to middlebrow audiences who generally have shit taste. Stuff like King's Speech, Argo, Theory of Everything, etc all fit this characteristic neatly. Genuinely good stuff like Schindler's List definitely do not.
