So what film, domestic or foreign, was your favorite from 2015 so far, /tv/?
>>63408747
Does it follows count as 2015? If not then either ex machina or youth, this year has fucking sucked
>>63408747
What a fucking shit year 2015 has been for film.
That collage just puts things into perspective.
>>63408747
I was fairly impressed with the westerns that came out this year, but they were kinda under the radar:
Slow West
Bone Tomahawk
(highly anticipating Hateful Eight)
So far, Sicario or Ex Machina.
>>63408831
>>63408898
False. You guys just don't look at much outside of your local movie theater. Every year has a number of excellent releases.
>>63408747
>2 times Taken 3
>50 shades of shit
>Blackhat
>Chappie
>Avengers Age of Plebon
It's like they weren't even trying.
>>63409080
whats your favorite, friend?
>>63409106
I'll check it out, never heard of it!
Thanks, dawg
>>63409106

>>63409143
What's your favorite 2015 flick, friendo?
>>63408747
The only one i've seen is Taken 3.
Wasn't as good as the first one.
>>63409143
>>63409126
What are yall's favorites from the year?
Pasolini, A Most Violent Year, 22 Jump Street, Sicario, Blackhat
>>63408926
>Bone Tomahawk
good premise but the second half sucked pretty badly compared to the buildup. Also the fantasy shit did not fit at all.
>>63409152
>>63409162
Hard to say. There were many good releases this year. Cemetery of Splendor, Plemya, and Dancing Arabs instantly come to mind, though.
I was also very excited to see A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence. As with all of Andersson's work, it has an appealing aesthetic and zany warmth to it, but it felt frustratingly safe. I was disappointed.
>>63409202
I think you might have a point with the pay-off, but goddamn that movie will stick with me for just the solid brutality of that payoff.
Also, I can see why you'd call the Troglodyte shit 'fantasy,' but the way they presented it was pretty fucking original and real, not really fantastic.
>>63409221
damn good list, man, I'll have to check out Cemetery of Splendor!
>>63409241
They should have just used indians instead. No reason to make them all like mutants.
>>63409275
It has something to say about modern audience's inability to reach back and be part of a leathery past, where all that shit existed. Their utter savagery is symbolic, in a way, of something innately human inside everyone in that film, but something we don't want to acknowledge. I don't think it would have been nearly as good of a movie if it didn't have them and just had some Red Skins
>>63409266
Here's my 2015 list of lesser-known movies. At the very least, I recommend looking into the titles you're unfamiliar with. You're bound to come across a handful that pique your interest.

Is Assassination actually good, or are you just trying to pad out your list? I accidentally downloaded it while looking for Assassin.

>>63409373
It's pretty much the opposite of The Assassin—action-packed where the other is deliberate; quickly-paced where the other is glacial; full of expository dialogue where the other is meditative.
It's a popcorn flick, but a good one. Ignore the "turn your brain off" meme.
>>63409392
I'm glad you know about it; that doesn't mean everyone does. Curb your autism.
Rather unimpressive year. With the exception of The Assassin nothing really sparkled my attention.
The Assassin - 9
Love - 8
Son of Saul - 8
Blackhat - 8
Taxi Tehran - 8
Duke of Burgundy - 8
Love & Mercy - 7,5
Cinderella - 7
Victoria - 7
Tangerine - 7
Beasts of No Nation - 6,5
Ex Machina - 6,5
Mad Max - 6
Inside Out - 5
All I've seen.
There is still a few ones that I will watch til the end of the year (waiting for The Martian & The Intern rip).

Goosebumps was the bomb

>It was a great year, just like every year.
Sure, if you like mediocre foreign films masquerading as being worthwhile and non-stop capeshit + rehashes.
Its been a great year if you went to any film fests, or just saw non-major releases tbqh
1. Stations of the Cross
2. Anomalisa
3. Evolution
4. Queen of Earth
5. Sicario
6. Viaje
7. Entertainment
8. A Most Violent Year
9. A pigeon Sat on a Branch...
10. Beasts of No Nation
Should I watch Youth, Victoria, Love, Hard to be a God, Two Step or The Little Prince rn?
>>63409525
I can tell you here that Hard to be A God is a slog, and plays out like a long Medeival Russian poem.
But I'm into that shit, and I liked the atmosphere
>>63409525
You should read Hard to be a God. It's like 200 pages.
>>63409459
Of course.
>>63409520
I'm sorry they come across as inaccessible to you. Fortunately, being obtuse now doesn't mean you always will be.
>>63409525
Good list.
Hard to be a God is the most ambitious on that list; Love is the most self-indulgent; The Little Prince is the most refreshing; Youth is the most aesthetically pleasing; Victoria is the most mundane, even with its technical feats.
I haven't seen Two Step.
>>63409567
>The Little Prince is the most refreshing; Youth is the most aesthetically pleasing
happy you responded, looks like i'll doing a double feature
>>63409589
Have you seen The Great Beauty? If by some chance you haven't, watch it AFTER Youth. It is dazzling, and I am by no means using that word liberally.Hopefully you don't disagree.
>>63409525
Hard to be A God is the best of the decade but it is not from 2015, neither is Horse Money and Pidgeon Sat on a Branch.
>>63409656
It all depends on where you live. Let's not get mixed up in technicalities; it dilutes the purpose of this thread (spotlighting quality cinema).
>>63409656
It was available to the US in 2015 though, right?

Man, I don't think there was that many movies this year which I saw. The only ones I can remember were
>Inside Out 8/10
>Maze Runner:Scorch Trials 5/10
>The Martian 6/10
>Legend 7/10
>Mad Max:Fury Road 5/10
>Tomorrowland 5/10
>Sicario 5/10
>Paper Towns 6/10
>Beasts of no Nation 8/10
>Straight Out of Compton 7/10
>The Lobster 9/10
>We Are Your Friends 7/10
>Circle 9/10
>Irrational Man 6/10
>6 Years 6/10
>Some French film about a guy who joins the army, meets a girl, they run away to the woods together and realise the whole point of life is to have sex. Can't remember its name, twas french. 7/10
Favourite was The Lobster. Love isn't blind just short sighted, that's what I got from it.
>>63409626
i honestly haven't seen it, but i've had DL'd for quite a while. I have the time today to go through both so I might just do that, thanks a lot my man
>>63409989
Sicario and Mad Max are way better than Maze Runner tho
Mad Max is definitely MOTY.
I thought Jurassic World and Terminator Genisys were around the same in terms of entertainment.
>>63409989
You have Paper Towns rated higher than Sicario? is this a new meme I'm not familiar with yet?
>>63408747
In dis order:
Macbeth
Mad Max beyond Kekdome
Sicario
Slow West
Ex Machina
Awaiting:
In the Heart of the Sea
The Revenant

Beasts of no Nation and Sicario were the best movies of the year for me.
How does Ex Machina compare?
>>63412404
Watch it and decide for yourself.
>>63409177
I could see AMVU, because it came out December 30, 2014, but what kind of bullshit excuse do you have for thinking 22 Jump Street came out this year?
Otherwise fine taste. AMVU is one of my favorites of the decade.
>>63409338
>Clouds of Sils Maria
>2015
pick one
Sicario
From what I actually saw in no real order:
Max Max: Fury Road
Beasts of no Nation
Sicario
Ex Machina
Inside Out
But I only ever see half the relevant films in a given year as they come out, usually binge everything online between New Years and the start of next semester.
Definitely plan on seeing both Revenant and Anomalisa over break though. And Star Wars VII I guess, though that doesn't really count as the same league as these other movies.
1. The Thoughts That Once We Had
2. A German Youth
3. Blackhat
4. Bitter Lake
5. Those Who Feel the Fire Burning
6. The Walk
7. 88:88
8. Fear Itself
9. Hyperlinks or It Didn't Happen
10. BACK TO THE FUTURE predicts 9/11
>>63408747
>>63408747
I don't see most of the year's movies until the following year, except for the big ones that I'm interested in.
I'd have to say Ex Machina and Fury Road, but it'll be awhile before I see all the ones I want to see.
>Blackhat meme
You win /tv/. Over the course of 2015 people have been spamming this movie in pretty much every top 10 list thread I can recall.I'd say check the archives if you don't believe me, but that's not really an option nowadaysThis whole time I've assumed it was some dumb joke because the movie got shitty reviews (users and critics) and flopped hard, like last year when people tried convincing others that Pompeii was one of the year's best, only for a bunch of people to be tricked into watching it (to be fair, it's dumb fun from what I've heard). Now, I'm convinced it's not "just another meme." It seems people really like it. Now I plan on watching it soon. It's possible that people just have really shit taste (insert joke here) or that /tv/ is full of Mann fanboys (which it is), but it's also entirely possible you guys are right and managed to convince me to watch a great movie I wouldn't have seen on my own judgement.
>>63414428
It's mostly just people rooting for Mann. With that said, Blackhat is some of his best technical work (direction, editing, cinematography), even though the plot and acting are underwhelming.
1. The Stanford Prison Experiment
2. Going Clear
3. The Walk
4. Bridge of Spies
5. Inside Out
6. Love & Mercy
7. Creed
8. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
9. The Martian
10. Sicario
Honorable Mentions: Kajaki (Kilo Two Bravo), It Follows
>>63409147
>The.Assassin.2015.Bluray.1080p.DTS-HD.x264-Grym
>>63414337
it is a bit retarded to do best of lists when the year isn't even finished yet. it would be more comprehensive to do best of 2014 list right now given that most people watch movies when they come out on bluray several months after their theatrical release.
only ex-machina
>>63414428
It's in the top 10 of Manohla Dargis and other critics, it ain't a meme
Jupiter Ascending or Fury Road. Haven't seen that much new shit this year though.
>>63414590
You're right, but at the same time these "work in progress" lists are an excuse to recommend movies to other people they might not have considered before.
Like, "I thought '71 looked dumb from the trailers, but anon has it as #3 on his list. Maybe I should give it a chance." These threads have given me great recs for stuff I was on the fence about/never heard of in the past:
>2013
Rush, Blue is the Warmest Color, Upstream Color
>2014
Nightcrawler, Foxcatcher, Calvary, The Immigrant
Plus, this is the closest this board ever comes to film discussion (even if it's often just bait for (You)s). If we just made these at the end of the year, they'd probably last a month before discussion shifts over to 2016 and Star Wars.
