how could the most succesful film ever made is really forgettable and has no impact for the world's culture?

It kind of did, it sent the environmental nuts on a rampage that continues to this day.

Because other than remaining maker of enjoyable film, James Cameron decided on becoming a scam artist at some point.

>>63406225

The only reason why this shit made so much money was the 3D marketing. Film itself was garbage.

And was also the reason that Alice In Wonderland randomly made over over a billion.

I guess it is kind of odd, no one makes any jokes about it or references it at all. It's like everyone saw it just once and then completely forgot about it.

/tv/ was pretty fun around that time though

Modern marketing at work, my friend. Profits have never been higher while quality is on the verge of being at an all time low. It applies to all aspects of life these days, not just movies.
>>
>>63407021
Nicely meme'd, friend
>>
>>63407017
I had to check Wikipedia to tell if this was some kind of ironic ruse. I honestly didn't believe it made anywhere close to a billion.

The highest grossing movie of all time. Not once. But twice though?
>>
>>63406225
it was only a commercial success because it was the first major movie doing 3D pretty well. anything else is just bland and boring, that's why there is no second part so far, 3D is getting old and the movie most likely will flop.

Avatar was successful because it repopularized 3D movie going and also IMAX 3D. Because of this it stayed in theaters for a very long time, also adding to sales. Basically it was a moviegoing event where people were like "Dude, the visuals are amazing." And that's literally all anyone remembers about the film: the cool 3D effects. People went out to see it multiple times or told their friends to go see it because it was the first anyone had seen of 3D effects that looked that good. That's why all the top grossing films now are 3D or IMAX 3D films: the tickets literally make more money per sale. Story itself was mad forgettable, basically ripped of Pocahontas and other stories.

Basically Avatar should be remembered as a technical achievement in modern cinema that influenced other films. Anyone who actually thinks the story is good is deluding themselves.

>>63407355
Zoe Zaldana actually has a decent career now though. Probably the only person from the Avatar cast who does. She's Uhura and that alien from Guardians of the Galaxy too.

Avatar came out right when I stopped liking 3D movies. Is this really what fucked up the 3D market?
>>
>>63406225
Oh look, Reddit.
>>
>>63407569
Avatar's release date is literally the exact pinpoint in cinema's history where almost every single blockbuster was an IMAX 3D film.

Why do you think Avengers, Jurassic World and Alice in Wonderland made so much money? It's part of why The Force Awakens is poised to take over Avatar's spot: it's one of the few films that has a massive amount of interest as well as being an IMAX 3D film. Basically if they keep Force Awakens in theaters long enough, it will outgross Avatar.

It also helped that it was well-placed (big-budget film in a month mostly packed with low-rent Oscar bait) and had a lot of international market appeal (even aside from the anti-imperial messages, international markets tend to love effects-driven films, because not a lot can get lost in translation).

even steven spielberg has said he thinks it will be the biggest movie of all-time. the later episodes won't be as big an event as the 'return' of Star Wars.

in a world with non-stop Capeshit, Star Wars, giant robots, giant monsters and more fast and furious movies, who will care about Avatar's sequels? Cameron will need to step his game up if he wants people to care, I imagine most will just find them to be unnecessary sequels/cashgrabs; barely anyone remembers what happened at all in Avatar.

try this: go outside to a college campus or some kind of crowded area, try asking 100 people or more to name their favourite Avatar character. If more than 5 people can actually name a character from the film, I'll personally be stunned. I can't think of anyone who remembers any dialogue or characters.

Meanwhile almost everyone in America has a favourite Star Wars character.

I agree with this, but Im still excited for the sequels. Now that I know to have 0 expecations for plot and acting, I'll just soak in the visuals.
