It's funny that they based it on a real guy, then made up a child that he never actually had, and then completely downplayed the essential conflict between father and made-up child that would've provided a good dramatic heart for the story. I would've liked a movie that was entirely about this old butler who climbed out of the deep South clashing with his "uppity" son who wants to push for civil rights, but nope, instead I'm treated to Oprah Winfrey's drinking problems and a bunch of pointless Forrest Gump-esque presidential scenes.

The main reason they were detained was to prevent spying/insurgency attacks.
