But it's honestly a good retcon. It had the Doctor actually being himself and saving everyone, he just lived with the thought that he killed everyone, which adds to the tragedy of the character.

Eh, well, I think it's mostly because of the direction they take Doctor Who.
With RTD, Doctor Who was really personal and Earth based, every finale had some big shit happening on Earth, some familiar characters would appear and get thrown into the action. It really added a sense of familiarity.
With Moffat, he does it more out there, something will happen on the far reaches of space and the fate of the universe would be at stake, somehow relating to his newest female companion, he'd go for the complete opposite in concept, but thematically it was still stuck to character.
Moff Who doesn't really spend that much time on Earth. That's why we don't get much references to the huge events from RTD's era.
Unless we talking Series 5, that was legit buildup to the finale, they were put in a ''scenario'' to get the Doctor in the Pandora. When the universe is rebooted everything goes back to normal.
In the Dalek episode the Doctor even references how Amy should know what Daleks are.

Should also add that 12 did basically prove "he was a soldier" in the most recent episode, so it kind of fits. You could definitely spin it and make the argument if Moffat went this route.

It was definitely meant to be a nod to all the tumblrinas who watch the show. Literally turned off the Nerdist recap when the two women started blabbing about how "badass" the character and the scene were.
It also didn't help they were complimenting each other's "TARDIS Blue" glasses and Clara Oswald lookalike outfits. Watching what has happened to the Who fandom and its evolution into tumblr-tier "girl geeks r kewl too" bullshit is depressing. He has a Dalek mobile and she's already dressed him up as 11 for photos. Last I remember us growing up, she was the girl who wouldn't touch sci-fi and was obsessed with really girly shit. The series just became all about inclusion. I'm not trying to sound like a hipster or a small-minded nerd, even though I definitely am. I just hate that something that used to be so pure and campy and fun... it's just evolved into this "everybody can play now too" tripe that is progressive and commercial for the sake of just grabbing that larger audience and selling products. When it was still Tennant, my buddy and I (another teacher) had a giant Eccleston cutout we shared in our classroom. He had a TARDIS mug, I had my Dalek mug. Sometimes we had a Sonic Screwdriver as our laser pointer. Kids laughed at it and sort of understood, but mostly thought of us as the weird nerdy teachers. Once Smith happened, though, suddenly every girl we taught thought we were the coolest shit ever. They all came in with police box backpacks, a couple tried dying their hair red to be like Amy, and we even had a boy who showed up wearing bowties every day. It was a phenonemon, an exclusive club to join.
Did the kids understand the show? Fuck no. They couldn't hold a conversation about the plot or the actors to save their lives. They just liked the flashy lights and pretty actors. It was disgusting. Both my friend and I kind of stopped our shenanigans at that point.
