Movies aren't just one person's vision anymore, so many people have a finger in the pie and the most you can do is make your part the best you can. Maybe it turns out that having Lawrence Kasdan write the story was a bad idea, but JJ isn't going to slack off in the directorial department. He gets good performances out of his actors and brings excitement through the lens of film.

These things don't have to be extremes. The shot from The Force Awakens trailer we're talking about is nothing comparable to a Michael Bay film. It's a nice, steady, smooth camera movement that ads some energy to the shot and informs the way the two characters interact given the hustling environment they're in.
