People in Northern Ireland automatically have dual nationality of both Irish and British thanks to the Good Friday Agreement.
The issue is generally decades of cultural divide and sectarian distrust fueling things. Nationalists want a United Ireland on the basis of the colonisation and partition of Ireland being a historical wrong-doing that they feel must be reversed for the good of the Irish people to restore Ireland to what it's "meant to be". It's not so much about rights, although some argue that the respect of Irish culture is still lacking in Northern Ireland, it's definitely improved since the 60s/70s.
Unionists hold a strong distrust of the idea of uniting with the Republic due to what's known as the Protestant siege mentality. They feel that with the Irish in power they will be discriminated against and oppressed and their British culture will be shunned and attacked. Plus they generally have a level of contempt for the idea of "being Irish". They feel they have as much of a right to claim Northern Ireland and live in it because their ancestors fought for control of the area. Much in the same way Yanks would be pissed off if you suggested they shouldn't technically be in America if not for colonisation.
