Apparently they did a second take of him smashing the plate at the end of that one episode which for some reason means he's a fraud.
It's pretty well established that all the stuff actually involving the other people is legitimate. People have tracked down down some of them and from everything I've seen they were completely oblivious to the true nature of the show. I don't get how getting a better visual of Nathan's gag ruins the show. The woman's reaction was still real.
