If cassettes can make a comeback in music, what's stopping VHS tapes from coming back.
Screencap this 2016 is the year of the great VHS comeback
Already has, lots of small cult film distributors offer VHS versions now.
You're late dude.

I recently found a working VHS player and all of mine are still working with surprisingly good quality. I think a comeback is definitely possible.

Great another #gregghead with his pro vhs propaganda

What the fuck am I ever reading ?
>tfw I've been stockpiling VHS tapes recently because they're cheaper than DVD and Blu-Ray but people are gonna think I'm a tryhard hipster now
>>63368145
fuck off #timmhead
They already are, half of my class at uni are craving for a VHS and there's a new band in town who only sell their videos via VHS, saying that they have a soulful image quality.
>>63367166
Here is the main problem with VHS and Beta and why I don't see a comeback happening:
Magnetic degradation
Unlike my dad's vinyls from the 50s and 60s that still sound crisp and clear (because my dad treated them with the utmost respect) all of my childhood tapes have gone to fuck.
We had this high quality Sanyo VCR, when you were watching the recordings you made with it you couldn't tell you weren't watching live tv. They were perfect.
A few weeks ago I hooked up the same old Sanyo and started going through some of my old tapes and they had all gone completely to hell - washed out color, tracking lines, fucked up audio. It was all pretty bad.
>tfw got ~100 VHSs and a working vcr from my grandma because we were cleaning out her house
>already had a small collection of a few VHS tapes due to nostalgia/not having the DVD version
>now that I have a vhs player and my collection is already big i just keep getting more stuff on VHS because why not
feels good man. especially stopping the tape and being able to take it out, watch something else, then come right back to where you left off on the other tape, instead of shitty scene selection like on DVDs.

That's the most hypster's thing I saw this week end and I was in London.
I'm curious what's the Saint Graal set up with vhs hypsters ? 4 heads VCR or the shittier the better ? I imagined them like the crazy audiophiles with their 50 000 $ vinyl turntables.
true patricians use LaserDisc

I'm the legendary super hipster and I have a CED player
>>63368923
Bitch please you're so pleb.
Horror and Sci-fi always looked better on VHS than DVD. The inferior image quality hid the production flaws so you paid more attention to the movie.
I now wonder if recording DVD/Blu-ray to VHS would suffice.
What will we be hipster about in the future? File formats? Will kiddos one day be talking about how .mkv is so much better than whatever is dominant in time period?
>>63368679
>only sell their videos via VHS, saying that they have a soulful image quality.
Hipster as fuck
>>63369111
>he doesn't use .avi
With music it makes sense because the more compressed you make a sound, the lower the quality is.
Videos work in the opposite way. VHS will only make a comeback for nostalgic 90s kids.
>>63369111
.3gp format on flip phones
Why don't they just sell movies on flash drives now instead of circular discs? Seems like it'd be much more convenient.
>>63369111
8 inch Floppy disks to make a comeback, may as well if we're going full retard with retro shit.
Fuck that shit, I enjoy crisp clear hd
>>63369256
I don't think anyone is nostalgic towards floppy disks, the entry and eject was so shallow, don't miss it all.
>>63369229
Because discs are still dirt ass cheap to produce.
>>63369111
>not using .rmvb files
>>63368542
I give this response zero bags of popcorn (one soda)
>>63369280
I didn't add context so that's my bad. I remember reading something about how Blu-ray discs can only hold so much space. 50 gb looking it up. I think in the future that will quickly be perceived as a low quality file, especially because you can't handle 4k on it.
>>63368771
>instead of shitty scene selection like on DVDs.
Dude that was like the best thing to ever come out of dvd tho.
Sometimes you would just wanna watch the musical numbers on a Disney film on vhs so you would fast forward the tape hit play and you past it. You would than rewind the tape and stop and play it only to find out you went to fare back. Not to mention that if you played the same scene of a film on vhs tape over and over again that scene becomes fucked up with lines. Dvd scene selection my not be perfect but its a major time saver if you just wanna watch a specific scene. Plus you can watch the scene as many times as you want on dvd and it will play just as good the 1000 time as it did the first.
Do you have ANY idea how many copies of Frozen would be fucked up by now from little girls rewinding the tape to watch "Let it Go" over and over again ?
>load up DVD
>menu has spoilers in it
>load up VHS
>trailers for completely forgotten movies
>>63369278
>>63369342
I don't about resolution above 4k. On a 70" inch tv a good 4k source, i find already nearly impossible to distinguish pixels.
Maybe with the VR's shit they gonna push it until 12k for small screens k but I think this crazy res evolution has really to slow down. 8k monitor are on their ways.
To watch movie in the theater i'm totally find with 30Mpix camera, some screen in the World are so large there are no downsides.
>>63369186
That's a huge demographic, though.
>>63369476
I feel the same, but then I think back to when I was on older standards and though I didn't need anything better, and now I can't go back to them. 4:3 and to a lesser extent 720p pains me. I expect to feel that way again in the future.
>>63368923
Shit. I only ever bought a couple discs because my dad once worked at RCA and told me about it.... and how even at RCA hardly anyone bought it. We only ever had a VCR.
>>63369578
Yes it was a big step until 1080p. After I thought it was too hardware (storage, screen size, expensive blue ray) demanding for normal people to be worth it.
I think the most impressive step was DVD->720p mp4, it was really a game changer even for blind people.

>load up DVD
>Trailers come on.
>Hit skip button and go right to the menu
>Menu very rarely has spoilers . Some DVDs don't even have animated main menus.
>Press play movie
>Play a VHS tape
No
In the 90s people would say "play the tape" not "load the tape." The word "load" became a thing in the early 2000s when dvd players started displaying the word "loading.." when uses would place the disc into the DVD player.
So..
>Play VHS tape
>Black screen...
>1 min later still a black screen with a few white lines that go up and down the screen along with horrible Loud static noises that accompany the white lines.
>See trailers for a few films you could care less about
>See one for a film you already have
>Once in a blue moon you see one for something you might wanna hunt down and watch.
>forced to fast forward ads and trailers for a min or two just to get to the movie.
>>63368679
>soulful image quality.
Thats just buzzwords and marketing.
>>63370524
Did anyone ever say "jog forward" the tape when fast forwarding?
>>63370524
> VCRs
> Top loaders, front loaders, have been called these since day one
> "The word "load" became a thing in the early 2000s"
Dumb fag.
>>63368807
no people like the fucking sound of vinyl
hence why people either get flac 16-bit which is usually from digital souces
or
Flac 24-bit which is vinyl, if you like the vinyl sound.
There's no point until you go $300+ headphones or speakers
Do people really like the VHS look of movies??
>>63371387
>Do people really like the VHS look of movies??
No.
That would be defendable for laserdisk but they were too expensive and niche to have the nostalgic value of VHS.
And to continue the music comparison, I'm not sure VHS could come back like cassettes do. They are not as easy and practical to record on and easy to distribute as cassettes.
>>63371381
I'm talking about it in pop culture. Watch a movie from the 90s and you will never hear one fucking character ever say ..."Hey Bob why don't you pop the tape into the VCR so it can start loading "
You will on the other hand hear a shit load of people saying "Hey dude pop the tape into the VCR and play it."
Dumb fag.
>>63369793
They all still work?
