How do decide what rating you give a film?
>>
>>63369193
how much i liked it and how well it was made
>>
>>63369448
Does intention ever become a factor for you? If a movie like The Raid tries only to be a dumb action flick, but accomplishes that perfectly, would you rate it higher than a more 'high brow' film that falls short in a few small ways?
>>
>>63369502
yeah, that normally falls into the how it was made category, if it achieves what it is aiming for i'll probably bump it half a star or so

honest to hec* how can anyone enjoy this garbage?? horror movies are such a regression. they start with a stable family or person (who i never care about because they are just plot devices) that get screwed by an entity that doesn't appeal to my aesthetics (skulls, ghosts, knives, senseless killers, cemeteries... wow ok very scary good job), and end with the family or person ok, like in the beginning. and what did i get? nothing but a tasteless ride absolutely obese on expositive dialogue about the most predictable and uninteresting series of events. worst part is they take themselves so seriously, making these ridiculous """"tense""" scenarios, like i give a f*** if any of these """"people"""" die.. they are such easy movies to make. they dont even put any effort into getting people who arent interested in paranormal activities like me enjoy them because they know most are so they just throw in these visuals with pumpkins and ghosts and be done with it.

best part is james wan ripped off this garbage by conceiving the two bastard twins that are insidious and conjuring, and people ate it up again, godd***

It's kind of strange. Sometimes threads auto-sage, other times they die by inactivity with 50 posts.
It seems to be necessary to have at least 2 autists active for hours discussing whatever, or some strong user drama, like Amaranth or Hayley. Without that, the threads are weak.

I enjoy it quite a bit. I like the style, I like the premise, I love the twist. Park Chan-wook is an excellent director.
But at the end of the day it's a pretty basic revenge story, and the plot really loses itself after the big twist at the end.

I still find it enjoyable to watch, if only to see other people react to the twist for the first time.

3.5/5 is not very good, but i did like it a lot, its classified as a comedy but everything seems to be unintentionally funny

casino was ok but way too long and too much voiceover, and with wolf of wall street be basically remade casino, its the same story of some guy who gets to power, then a lot of excess and then his downfall.

im not a huge scorsese fan but i like bringing out the dead and after hours, taxi driver is nice too.

Because the first 90 minutes or so were really dull. Would have rated it even lower if it hadn't gotten good near the end. This is the kind of movie that could have benefited from being 30 minutes shorter.

I am starting to think that Scorsoso fucking hates women. I'm not even a fucking SJW, but it really shits me when all his female characters are the embodiment of >women, amirite. It pissed me off in Casino (every fucking side character gets a monologue but not the wife) and it really irked me in Cape Fear.

I think it's relevant, but I just hope I can phrase it properly.

Okay, so you know how other forms of media/art/culture influence eachother, including films? For example, if you were to watch a modern pleb comedy, there might be references to say... twitter or facebook or youtube or something.

Well basically, for classic/patrician films... how important is a literature knowledge? So that you can understand the references and even the themes etc.

I don't mean film literature either, but just literature in general. So like are are there films which I wont be able to understand fully if I don't have a knowledge of... let's say John Milton? I don't just mean adaptions either

I hope that makes sense. I'm sorry if it doesn't.
>>
>>63375639
It depends on the film in question. An understanding of literary devices or other technical and cultural knowledge is usually a requirement for arthouse or other abstract works of art.

Your question is hard to answer because it is vague yet you also want specific examples.

Mention a film or two maybe and we can probably get a bit more specific.

A good example might be Daisies or something else with political/social references.

I watched El Topo recently and struggled because of exactly what you describe.

I couldn't find meaning in 90% of the symbolism and I didn't understand if there was or what it was if there was any social commentary or whatever habbening fug.
>>
>>63375639
It depends on the film. For some, yes. For some, no.

To take an extreme example: Raúl Ruiz's "The Suspended Vocation", a film bursting at the seams with allusions to catholic theology, is practically impossible to comprehend without prior knowledge of the subject matter and of the poetry of scripture. What for some people is a playful and sharp-as-a-tack satire of religion in general and catholicism in particular is for others in large part incoherent ramblings on its meaning to the individual, to its church and to itself. Personally I found myself somewhere in the middle, having been interested in religion for most of my life and having read religious texts purely as literature, but the film is so utterly drenched in it, gets so specific and by extension alienating to anyone not well versed that you'd need to be a full-blown theologian to be able to unpack it.

My family are all plebs. So, no. None of them have seen a Bergman film at all, and we're Swedish.

I'd say context is always important. I wouldn't consider The Raid to be a "low brow" film because it's doing what it wants to do. With that mindset I can still enjoy 80s action movies and things. If I wanted everything to be like The Tree of Life or Solaris I would be miserable. Like, Adam Sandler movies are shitty comedies, and can't even be enjoyed in the context of shitty comedies, but I found something like Zoolander to be decent for a shitty comedy like that.

Why do people pretend to like Muh Kierkegaard: The Movie 2: Knight of Faith Boogaloo?

Answer: because they think it can make them look smart without having read Kierkegaard or the existentialists or any philosophy.
>>
>>63374648
don't be concerned anon. there is some talking, most of it in english, but it is mostly unimportant. it is a total cinematic experience.

I thought it was funny and had a great score. My review acknowledges that Cranston plays it like he's mocking the guy and that there's no real emotional beats in it besides witty clever jokes and angsty father-daughter shit. But it was a good watch.
>>
>>63391989
it just felt so slapdash and anonymous to me, like everyone was in/making a totally different movie.

i guess its fine, i was just shocked by the 4 1/2

I'm a pleb and tend to rate things highly even with glaring issues

T B H I think the movie is best described by Trumbo's dialogue when he says "A movie where every scene is brilliant would be boring". Damn how did they let that get by without realizing

>>63392213
i mean if you enjoyed it, that's always a good thing. i did enjoy the caricature of otto preminger.

No.
>>

Why did you love it?
>>
>>63393167
it maked me feel good
>>
>>63393167
The largest aspect is the sheer visual beauty of it. It's atmospherically marvelous, immaculately staged, choreographed and shot and finds emotional resonance in the seemingly most mundane and throwaway of moments, basically. I'm still sort of digesting it.
>>
>>63392952
because goosebumps was good for what it tried to be, a solid kids movie with some spooks, victoria on the other hand was shit on every level except on the technical level. stupid, unlikable, unrelatable characters, complete shit dialogue, cringy broken english for 3 hours. also the one take gimmick made was completely unnecessary, especially because it made the movie feel like it was supposed to be artsy when it really wasnt. it would have been more believable is victoria had looked more like a dumb crackwhore, which she really was according to her actions.

>>63393062
3/5 is seriously not a good rating, and is it so wrong to finish a movie and say you didnt like it but still see what it did well? the prestige has top tier acting, great editing and cinematography and high production value.

Am I being taken for a spin?

I don't think it does a lot of things well at all. Honestly, 2/5 is me being nice. I'll give you the acting, though. Working against that kind of material is usually a thankless task, but I think everyone except Johansson comes out looking good.

holy shit how boring are you? nobody rates like this. you aren't a walking "objective" wikipedia entry. you are a human. a dislike is a dislike.

i rated like you do when i was 15, grow up and actually evaluate art.

I just watched Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. It's ok, average at best, not my type of film though, watch it if you like silent or homely slow cinema like Ozu
>>
>>63397747
That's disappointing. I still adore Chantal Akerman though for how she would scorn people who tried to put political labels on her work.
>>
>>63397835
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great concept but the result is so stale imo, I do enjoy slow cinema but not this kind of slow cinema. If you like slow pacing, long shots, stoic acting or minimalist cinema a lá Kaurismaki then you are going to love this one.
