so there's a new Stargate trilogy coming

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2014/12/devlin-confirms-stargate-movie-before-third-independence-day/

what are your hopes/fears/predictions?
>>
>>63348393
Hoping it will be okay, mad because it fucks over over 10 years of stories. But i guess if i treat it like an alternate reality movie it can be OK.
>>
Those costumes are so fucking great.
>>
>>63348684
They are.

I watched this movie for the first time in forever though, and it was horrendous

hopes: that it will suck less than I think

fears: it'll suck

predictions: it'll suck

Hopes-
Practical Effects, Human guile (Every soldier is Kurt Russel), High Science and Mythology

Fears
Attempt to appeal to the star wars audience.
Heavy use of Cgi
Extra Bad acting.
Quip fest theme, low end sci fi concepts

Predictions
58% RT Score
TV show fans hate it
garners its own cult following
/tv/ says its okay and forgets it a week later...

All the tv-show fans, myself included will watch the movie. But understandably so a movie by a director who isn't good that shits on everything we've known stargate wise for over a decade isn't fun.
>>
>>63348716
yeah SG1 really dropped the ball on that one. those masks in the movie are fucking amazing and terrifying. on the show, they're just awkward turtle heads, and when they introduced other system lords beside apophis they never bothered to make more and just let jaffa run around as regular dudes which totally defeats the entire point of the helmets

Yeah, agreed. Apophis was pretty based in that regard. There were some episodes you could still see those helmets, bust mostly they got rid of em. Likely it was pretty expensive to have often.

Why don't we have a stargate thread while we are at it?
>>
>>63348823
i don't think it was expensive at first when they were just dealing with apophis, for which case they had a dozen snake helmets, or occasionally heru'ur for which they could reuse the falcon helmets because he was Ra's son. but later on they never bothered to adapt this scheme to other system lords (and it wouldn't have really worked either, because this animal head thing doesn't even work for all egyptian gods, never mind all the others they introduced)

so in the end it's a carry-over from the movie that eventually didn't work with what the show became

I can’t believe anyone would actually want to see this. The Stargate film is, by far, the weakest aspect of the franchise (other than the cartoon). All three TV series were FAR superior to that weakly written and directed movie. Emmerich is a complete hack, and letting him do a sequel to that film instead of continuing the TV franchise is a massively stupid decision.

>>
>>63351396
not very. they're twisting it as they need it. but the egyptian language in the movie is quite remarkable. they actually hired an egyptologist for that. so what the abydonians speak in the movie, that's actually pretty close to what egyptian soundede like

like when kasuf eats the candy bar and exclaims "bany! banyway!"

that means "sweet! how sweet!"
>>
>>63351460
Cool, and what about the names and things like that? Obviously they had to twist some to fit the goa'ulds.

Well, the original movie had the helmets as a CGi collapsible thing, while the helmets in SG-1 were practical effect. So obviously they were going to be less fancy.

I wish there were more helmets, hell I wish there were a lot of things in the series that weren't I remember thinking the furlings were going to be the Cynocephalus of legend, and the Goa'uld animal head gear was inspiration from them. but I wasn't there, so whatever.
>>
>>63351698
well ba'al isn't egyptian so i can't really speak for him

but horus for example was originally called Haluw, later Haré. the names we know are usually filtered through their greek and roman reception
>>
>>63351795
Cool, i didn't know this.
>>
>>63351889
yeah and it's not just names and words. 99% of what the media will give you on egypt is based on a mystifying tradition that has little to do with reality. unfortunately, there's a big gap between this world and the work of egyptologists that barely gets any public reception
>>
>>63352026

if i had to recommend one book, it would have to be Jan Assmann: Ägypten. Eine Sinngeschichte (English translation: The Mind of Egypt). That gives you a good overview of Egyptian history and religion, and the last chapter tackles the issue of the reception history that Stargate is a part of
>>
>>63352186

2 MB, 488x275
>>63352179
Maybourne is the best
>>
>>63352215
well you really have to differentiate. the language and some details, yes, those were reconstructed accurately

but you have to differentiate between that and the traditions of reception that the movie takes part in

the ancient aliens thing? has nothing to do with egyptian history proper, it's a 90s craze, and the mystification of egypt in general is something that started with the ancient greeks who didn't understand egypt either but projected their own ideas on it

and Ra and his regime of terror? That's directly indebted to the Jewish/Christian image of Egypt as the embodiment of idolatry and slavery

So the essence of Stargate, in various ways, is not based on Egypt as uncovered by archaeologists, but on passionate traditions derived from Greece on the one hand and Judaism on the other.

See how this works? The reception of Egypt is completely contaminated by age old prejudices, and what scientists who actually can read hieroglyphs have figured out is completely disregarded in all of this.

it's not easy reading, especially if you have no prior training in egyptology. but it's really worth it. and to understand the important difference between the scientific and the media image of Egypt, you might just read the last chapter first, because that's about the reception history.
>>
>>63352822
Yeah i was about to comment on that, it doesn't look like an easy read. But while i have you here, do you have any good documentaries about bailin egyptian pharaos, pyramids, their graves and so on?

Another thing not so related, but is this just a myth or wasn't there this grave believed to be cursed who all who have entered have died? Or at least several did.
>>
>>63352885
i haven't seen any documentary that isn't just a sensationalist reduction of what it's really about. i can just say, reading assmann's books is sort of an egyptology major in a nutshell.

i've never looked into the curse thing. i think there may be a few tombs that wish ill on anyone breaking in, but nothing like the movies would have you think.
>>

we don't? champollion deciphered the hieroglyphic writing system in 1822, since then egyptologists have spent almost 200 years translating the inscriptions, refining their understanding of the grammar, the dialects, the history of the country, religion, economy, fucking everything
>>

>>What was the purpose of the Star Gates, just interstellar travel for what?

The star gates were built by the ancients, the gould just used them to conquer planets.

>>The Earth Star Gate was shut down, because the slaves revolted, why?
>they buried it. of course this doesn't explain why earth wasn't reconquered via spaceship
Earth wasn't particularly important. Just mining colony #9001 in the vast empire of system lord #92

>>The alien in human skin(?), Ra(?), was like an emperor, did he just travel from planet to planet vacationing or some shit? What value were a bunch of primitives or did he just like being worshipped, the fuck?
>as the movie explains, he was dying and needed a new host
System lords never really care that much about any particular planet. They have many and spent some time on some while basically ignore others.

>>He was originally an alien, why was he dying?
>we just don't know
Hosts live a longer life due to the symbiotic, but they are not immortal. They need to get new hosts from time to time.

>>Where did he come from and were his kind responsible for the Star Gates?
>the movie implies as much, of course the tv show contradicts this, but i'm sure the new movies won't
In the movies they believe the gould made the stargates and in the show the gould claim to of made them, tho it is reviled that they did not and it was the ancients that did.

>>His body guards (the animal head guys) were humans(?), why were they protecting him? Same with all the other human kids in his space pyramid, were they mind controlled or some shit?

Yeah i mean i don't really know anything. Of course those parts we know to the best of our ability on what we've gathered and deciphered. But i mean a documentary isn't necessarily bad is it? Can't really remember seeing a documentary paining what you talk about in a bad light. How did they build the pyramids for example?

what i mean when talking about documentaries is that they always lack the bigger context and aim for sensationalizing everything. for example, a favorite subject is king akhenaten and his religious revolution (he tried to impose his belief in only one god on the country and take their gods away from them). to really contextualize this properly, you would have to dig deep in the history of egyptian religion, about the conflict between two discourses, one of which focuses on the sun god as creator, the other focusing on the gods and their mythology and what it means for humans on earth. instead, documentaries just jump on akhenaten being a lone wolf fighting the establishment DUDE HE WAS JUST LIKE MOSES YOU PROBABLY WOULDNT WANT ONE OF THESE HERETICS IN YOUR BACK YARD *RAPID JUMP CUTS OF THE RELIGIOUS RECOLUTION*

you see what i'm saing? tv documentaries never address the actual issues because they don't make for dramatic hollywood narratives

Yeah, i suppose that is pretty true. Though years ago on national geographic and even discovery they had some pretty decent documentaries imo. But of course nowadays things are like you say unfortunately.

Start at the start. There are a few mediocre episodes in s1 but after that it's all good. Some people don't like the cast restructure in s9-10 but if you've watched 8 seasons you may as well finish it. The two movies are not bad. Atlantis is good as well, and only 5 seasons. I never got into SGU but people say it gets better in the second half of s2.
