>>63318289
yeah I think that's a pretty silly criticism. she uses her voice in a way that imitates the wide range of her harp. it kinda sounds like you might be a big ol' pleb though
>>63318302
No. Learn to read.
>>63318245
What >>63318289 said. Compare it to, say, Julia Holter. Her voice while sounding completely natural and honest, is unique in its own way, not caricaturesque like Newsom's.
>>63318302
>>63318316
I bet you also love christina aguilera and shakira.
>>63316296
>>63316512
I kind of hate how female vocalists are generally either perfect, pretty voiced singers or they do this intentionally odd but still very pretty thing. There's such a wider range of male vocalists in all forms of music
>>63318344
There's a difference between liking something simply because it's unique and appreciating the fact that something is unique in a way which appeals to you.
someone please post the piano webm
>>63318328
I love Holter as well (I think Loud City Song is as good as anything, or possibly better, that Newsom has made) but I think Newsom's voice is far more interesting. Newsom uses her voice explicitly as an instrument in a way that can produce strong emotional reactions regardless of the words she's actually singing. Holter has a good voice too but her style places much less significance on its role I think.
anyway they're both great and they both released two of the best albums of the year so yay
>>63318473
stop
>>63318328
>not liking caricaturesque exaggeration.
>not liking Tiny Tim, Jeff Magnum, Klaus Nomi, Elisabeth Fraser
every time you raise your voice above its natural level, stretch it or strain a note that is out of your range, you are exaggerating.
It's the nature of heightened expression. Stop being a little bitch about it.
>>63318552
Could you point out the issue with what I wrote? I was trying to point out that no one's making the argument that being unique is inherently good, which is what many of Newsom's detractors are accusing her fans of doing.
>>63318638
How is Jeff Mangum "caricaturesque"?
I know right? She's perfect and he's just some idiot. Life just isn't fair.
>>63318712
In the same way Newsom is supposedly "caricaturesque".
>>63317824

>>63319161
Now you're putting words in my mouth. Key word was generally, and I specifically was thinking of the female dominated "art pop" genre. Kate Bush, Bjork, Newsom, St. Vincent, Holter etc. I'd like to hear more from music from women who don't sound like professional singers, like Laurie Anderson or Patti Smith
>>63319427
>>63319440
And yet, everything sounds literally the same right now. That was the point.

>ITT: Tumblrinas from /mu/ in full force

not one of the guys raging about Sufjan but it doesn't really sound like you listen to much contemporary music mate. A lot of the mainstream "indie" music that you'll hear in bars and that normal people listen to does sound like garbage folk but Sufjan isn't among their ranks and contemporary good music isn't all that folk-oriented
>>63319526
regardless of your opinion Newsom is currently one of the most respected popular musicians in the world and also one of the most complicated and interesting lyricists around. Samberg on the other hand does nothing but make dick jokes. The two of them seem like a rather unlikely pair.

>>63319508
then I don't understand your complaint.
"generally either perfect, pretty voiced" or "intentionally odd but still very pretty" is a pretty narrow spectrum to nail down all art pop singers. You could apply the same analogue to male art pop singers and get completely nowhere.
>>63319691
I don't follow. It's hard to recommend things to people if they don't give you some idea of what they like.

it kinda just sounds like you don't listen to much music mate. if you listen mostly to rock from the 60s and 70s and generally just have a big collection of singles/greatest hits it means that you're probably not all that familiar with much music so your comments earlier about all music sounding like that Sufjan song seem a little silly.

I try to just it out of my mind, desu, and I still like her. In fact I realized how minimal black music and black female singing style has influenced her work; she's one of the very few working "white" artists. It seems ot me every white female singer/songwriger does that thing with her voice that black women do (think Whitney Houston singing "I will always love you,ooOoOOo." I lack the musical terminology to label it, but it's become anathema. Go back to the 80s, even the 90s, and you NEVER see white female pop/indie singers doing that.
