Does /tv/ have any good recommendations for Criterion movies?
>>
Hara Kiri
>>
Day for Night, released recently
>>
Thin Red Line because the extras are really, really insightful. Bits on acting, editing, more of those songs with still photography of the shoot over it, fascinating commentary by production designed, DP, and producer. Besides sharing the nuts and bolts of how it was made they tell some funny Terry stories.

Close Up is worth it for the documentary on Sabzian. Kiarostami never got to make his as Sabzian met an untimely death.

the criterion blu ray of TTRL is the best looking blu ray on the market by a country mile.

If it matters to you, you just missed an enormous sale. There may be another one closer to the holidays? But just saying, FYI if you didnt know, they're not infrequent and a good time to pick up whatever you want at discounted prices.

What do you think of other Kiarostami films like Certified Copy and Like Someone in Love?

Certified Copy is a masterpiece.

Like Someone in Love is very good.

Taste of Cherry, Where is the Friend's Home, and Ten are excellent as well.

why isn't there a bluray of Taste of Cherry yet? why is criterion so slow?

I was going to say that one and Vampyr - the Criterion was my first exposure to Watership Down, quietly blown away.

Doesn't really matter just buy a bunch and show off your collection.
>>
The blu-ray edition of the Qatsi trilogy looks stunning, definitely recommend that. If you're a fan of Cassavetes the boxset's a must as well.

Powaqqasti is just as good as Koyaanisqatsi. I don't even bother watching Naqoyqatsi ever. I watched it once and was disappointed, but the other two make up for it.

I saw the whole trilogy at a local art theater when they were touring around the 4k restoration prints.
It was probably because I was on mushrooms, but it was one of the best theater going experiences of my life.

Pather Panchali is top 5 greatest films I've ever seen, Aparijito and Apur Sansar are also really really good. Definitely watch the blu ray version if you can, the fact that they exist in the quality we have today is a miracle in itself.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only person here who watches arthouse on psychedelics. Patcher Panchali is a firm 10/10, but I don't feel the other 2 are anywhere near on the same level without the right actors.

>>63296489
I'm jealous, he's my favorite actor bar none.
>>
>>63296712

I think watching them all back to back really invested me in the sequels, even if they don't hit the same highs. But you're right about Panchali being in a class of its own, the grandmother character alone puts it a tier above the others.

Best psychedelic arthouse experience?

Stalker, bar none. No other film can transport me to its world or Zone like Stalker did.

Shinji Terayama's Pastoral is a good choice if you haven't heard of it yet. Warning though, incest. Intense incest.

Powaqqatsi was good, I mean it wasn't the best, but it was still good eye candy. I personally think the trilogy is worth it. Also Kobayashi in general is one of the best Japanese directors, all of his movie releases are worth a look.

That is bullshit mate, there are no movies that I watch for the status, like who would I impress with it? Everyone around me? Sure as hell not, I could take something from Tarantino and 50% would never have heard from it. Girls have no acquired taste in anything anyway.
Movies like "A seperation" might seem boring to someone who needs action but Iranian films are very emotional, very subtle. You can't find anything good in Hollywood, honestly the only films that touch me nowadays are more obscure titles, because there was someone with an honest heartfelt message and no intention to sell his shit to the highest bidder.
>>
>>63294775
I'm not American and don't even own a Criterion but I would not pay 40 bucks for a Blu ray, I mean if they have sales where they dosh out DVD'S and Blu rays for 50% off, that means they can sell for 20 and still make profit. 40 is just outright greedy, but I admit, if it would be a favourite, I'd even pay 100 for a nice remastered blu ray with a bunch of extras, it also depends on the cover art

I think most people don't even want to recognize the fact that "those" Muslims can even make such great art, it goes beyond their simple black and white concept of Muslim countries, where good people can only be the ones that don't recognize anything that resembles their culture. It's sad to be honest.

Kek what a small minded view, more like most people aren't aware of all the films by "those" muslims because they hardly have any promotion, even less at times inside their own country than foreign ones as they get banned for "radical" ideas.

It's the same with indian and hindi films that aren't bollywood type before the 2000's and 90's, no one talks about them, not anyones fault in particular.
