Thats always been the problem with many of Lovecrafts stories.
They're full of creatures and 'non Euclidean shapes' that are supposedly so large and fucked up looking that anyone looking at them immediately cracks and goes insane because our minds can't handle it

Sounds great on paper, but on screen? It'd be a tough thing to get right.

I agree. The written word is the best medium for that. You can better connect with the character and how they are feeling and reacting. I will say that the PC game "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" does a fucking bang up job at giving you that feeling and connection with the character. More than and Lovecraft movie could ever ever hope.

>>63285706
Not just that, but the characters are reacting to something unheard of before. The best explanation I think is in the book "Rendezvous with Rama" where the characters have to keep checking themselves to stay sane while they are still on the staircase the first time during descent. And, that was just referring to how perception, spacial awareness, and gravity/inertia was affecting them. I think it is much the same as the Lovecraft thing, only it deals with realizations, conceptions, and trying to understand things based on previously rigid norms.

Audiences today wouldn't react like they did when Lovecraft first wrote his stuff and thus if Lovecraft were to write it today it'd be completely different.

How could you physically adapt the colour from out space? They'd be unable to show the color because in the story it's a color they've never seen before. So how the fuck would you haven portray that?
>>
>>63287549
Meaningful introspection seems hard to portray in film where in prose pages at a time can be devoted to describing some abstraction. Different mediums just do some things better though I do think a competent director could offer an interesting interpretation, not so much an adaptation.

>>63287837

Yeah. Same with the Erich Zann movie. How do you make music that sounds unlike anything known on earth?

I think to get started with a series of Lovecraft adaptation they should start small. Something such as The Thing at the Doorstep. The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Something that can be shot on location and doesn't involve crazy CGI.

The German movie Die Fabre went about it clever enough; they made the film black and white and have the color only thing colored. But I understand what you mean, you can't TRULY replicate something like that. The only thing I could suggest is that you (and this would piss people off savagely) is not show the color whatsoever. Only, you show people's facial reactions to it or something. That's probably the only true way to achieve it.
>>
>>63288297
>Only, you show people's facial reactions to it or something.

That is essentially what Lovecraft does in the books. The reactions of the characters are what really hit home.

The best thing about the books is that they make you imaging it. Lack of specific information makes your mind fill in the blanks and you always fill it in with the worst thing you can imagine. That is why movies like Alien are far scarier than say Aliens where in the latter you can see the creatures all the time and the former is was always hidden in shadow.

Simply showing the character's reaction to something that you can not see is a very good method, because the audience will fill in what they can't see.
>>
>>63288512
Every fucking story

>We saw the big spoopy thing at the end of the hallway

>>
>>63288573

desu it's more like "danford saw the thing. his mind snapped and all he could do was mumble train stations, because the shoggoth reminded him of a train speeding fast through a tunnel." more often than not lovecraft doesn't describe the thing, but drops plenty of of hints like that to evoke some image in your head. as far as horror is concerned, i think that's a shitload more effective than just describing the thing.
>>
>>63288296

Quiet earth has other people. Night Watch has no-one. Until he starts noticing weird shit going on and starts filming himself while he's asleep. It's as creepy as hell.
>>
>>63288573

You'll have to make one yourself. The two round things on the ends are hand drums (Frame drum). The things connecting them to the stringed part he is playing are really long springs. I'm not sure what his source is for the springs but you can DIY those from spring wire if you have the tools. I tried looking for springs from other sources like garage doors but without any like. The string part is just some typical instrument strings attached to some wood.

In the Mouth of Madness
The Mist
The Thing
Cabin in the Woods
Hellboy
