No, the movie exaggerates that part. American high schools definitely have a social ladder, but so does pretty much everywhere else. The movie gets some of the basics down, though. I have no clue how accurate the gossip thing is, although I do know that some girls orchestrated some really cruel shit (leaking naked selfies of one another online, ironically electing a nerdy chick homecoming queen then laughing, etc.).
