Yeh, Buzzcocks went to shit with Lamarr leaving and Amstell arriving (contrary to popular belief). 8 Out of Ten Cats and Would I Lie to You are okay for an occasional laugh but are pretty crap really. QI's still alright too in small doses and can be interesting. Have I Got News For You has been repeating the same jokes for years.

Two things went wrong.
1 - Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand left that voicemail on Manuel's answerphone. Led to a crack down on 'bullying / offensive' behaviour by hosts & guests on BBC shows. No more edginess and guests are now chosen more carefully.
2 - Along with this, all guest quotas must now meet diversity targets. More women on shows who arent funny, this has backfired since they just seem to go to Jo Brand for everything now. No all male shows ever again.
BBC has essentially outlawed banter on every show they make.

I'd give you that, but I do think him struggling to control the show is basically part of his character. He's done plenty of other panel-shows before, and he basically functions as a really good straight-man. Also, given his vague poshness, his style really works well with Ayoade's cartoonish verbosity.
