There are two schools of thought on this: one that says subtitles shouldn't have fullstops, commas, &c and another that says they should. I personally correct .srt files to include commas and fullstops. Spelling errors bother me more, honestly.

On this subject, for some goddamn reason The Graham Norton Show ALWAYS has out-of-sync subtitles on iplayer. It's like the one show I watch in iplayer where I'd actually want subtitles, as well. And I don't know if you can fix the subtitle sync on iplayer.

Wasabi is a really fun example of that if you speak french.

The english audio doesn't match the english subtitles, the subtitles don't match the french audio, the french audio doesn't match the english audio.

Then I found a button that got the french and english audio to play at the same time with the french and english subtitles. My brain melted.

The people who 'translate' subtitles, or try to make their own when they have an english language knowledge of a 12 yo.

I'm french and nothing triggers me harder than that.

I mean its nice there is people who are willing to translate stuff for free and make it available for everyone, but when you're so BAD you actually get the meaning of the dialog wrong, you should just stop.

Its so infuriating to go through a dozen different subtitles files for a movie / episode only to find out that each and everyone of them has very poor translation or terrible sync.

Native english speakers dont know that feel.

I understand spoken english alright though so its not much of a problem for me anymore.

Its more annoying with british stuff like Peep Show for example, in which they talk less formal english compared to english american movies / series. So I watched it without subtitles, I understand it alright but I know I miss the little jokes and play on words.

You mean like those DVD bitmap subtitles?

Honestly I prefer those left as they are. Some people might not like seeing pixels, but OCR makes mistakes and often ruins the alignment if they were supposed to appear elsewhere on the screen.

Plus it just makes sense for archiving DVD rips. Exiled-Destiny have the right idea when it comes to animu.

http://exiled-destiny.com/faq.html

>Q. Why did Exiled-Destiny start using Graphic Subs only/Stop using text SSA/SRT subs.

This gives a good explanation for them. Basically, they're what's on the DVD.

I like (plain) text subtitles too, but they usually choose a thinner font I can't read. White or bright yellow with black outline (about half as thick as the text) is master race.

Ridiculous ASS/SSA subtitles with lots of fancy effects and movement and shadows, glows, etc. are too distracting.

I don't like this. I appreciate the effort involved, but there's no sense pretending closed captions are part of the animation. Subtitles are a meta thing that goes on top of the source video. We know the title of a book isn't written in English, so covering up the original drawing and then slapping "A Complete History of Japan" on top doesn't make a difference. Does it even add anything if you have to pause and read it? If it's important that a character is reading A Complete History of Japan, just stick that on the bottom with regular subtitles (like professional subtitles have done for decades).

I get what you mean, but some attempt to match the original styling could be nice.
>>
>>63255643
Just different strokes I guess.

I remember seeing a newer Pokemon anime where the group matched some of the original pixel fonts and everything. That was a creative choice by the fansubbers, but it definitely had a charm to it.

But in general I think subtitles should be something you see "after" everything else. Even if you don't read a language, it seems like a shame to paint over animation and replace it with your own. It's like when Cartoon Network replaces rice balls with sandwiches or guns with water pistols. Leave the cartoon itself alone.
>>
>>63255148
Rather, the translation should be on the sides, between lines, or something similar, to the original, and should follow the same style. It shouldn't be at the bottom because then it creates hard to follow main-vs-rest streams.
