In the the books Martin makes a point on lords and commanders having unique and colorful armor and flags so that they would be easily recognizable as persons of power that can be ransomed rather than killed in a ditch, like in real life.
After season one the show drops this completely for le gritty hard leather and fur, and no one, not even the hound wears his helmet anymore.
I never hated Dany beyond the fact that she bore me to tears. Her struggle to overcome her abuse and become her own person in the first book, along with her struggle to balance out mercy and governing with justice and fury in the fifth book were an okay read, that has sadly gone on for way too long. She isn't perfect, and that's a good thing.
My main issue with her is that all of her antagonists are literally puppy eating, baby killing, monsters. They even look like monsters. It's absurd, especially for a book that tries to sell itself on moral greyness. They are monsters so that Dany could have leave to massacre, crucify, and torture whoever she likes and still save face, which is pretty shitty writing. The show kind of improved that by changing Hizdahr and adding his dad, but with the innate dullness of Dany, Emilia's deadpan acting, removal of the tremendous failures that were Astopor and Yunkai, and the removal of Dany's struggle with ruling, the whole thing ended up being even more of a chore to get through than it was in the books.
