I think its a case of originally the shows legitimately used HBOs right to air sex , profanity and gore to make great televison because they used it in a way that actually helped with the story telling i.e The Sopranos
Now shows use it on purpose for no reason , just to be edgy , like Game of Thrones, its keeps up viewers but it makes the shows awfull

True Blood is when they started to care about ratings over quality tv.
Also the fact that Girls is still a thing when literally nobody watches it. They cancel Bored to Death, Hung, How to Make it in America and Enlightened due to low ratings but Girls gets a free pass because Lena Dunham is so fucking brave for being naked and unattractive on tv. I really hope next season is really the end so I don't have to see shit like Lena Dunham shaking her disgusting gut in my face when all I want to do is watch the only patrician show left on HBO, The Leftovers. HBO attracted some A+ talent who made some of the greatest shows ever produced. No one was taking tv seriously. So, HBO became the haven for all of this talent. The channl had such an impressive stable that, before long, it could no longer be discounted.
Golden age of television ushered in--->Rest of tv becomes competitive--->The field gets watered down as the talent pool gets spread far and wide

88% on the tomatometer is actually quite low for a tv show, and an 80 metascore is nothing to brag about either. Game of Thrones is regularly 90+, and Breaking Bad was a 97 or high in its final seasons.
Then there's the TV club reviews, which aren't even that impressive (a B in the second episode?). Just look at the scores for this season of Fargo if you want a comparison to something running right now.
I think you should consider replacing those parts of this image if you want to use it to convince people that the Leftovers is well-received critically.
