Roommates would always be streaming american dad and never gave it a chance. The more i sat there on my phone and overheard the show it grew on me. American dad is in my top 5 shows now. I've seen every episode and Holy shit. It has such a unique kind of humor.fucking amazing show

Confirmed for having never seen the show. If you did, you'd know Hailey exists to make fun of all things "left wing". Her poor judgement and foolish decisions often result in her getting into trouble and Stan having to bail her out.
Even then, the show has little to do with politics/pop culture and mostly focuses on the plot. It's not like Family Guy where most of the jokes rely on current events and general pop cult.

They have different writers. Seth McFarlane is merely the "creator" and a voice actor.
Plus, American Dad has a much better concept. There is a lot more you can do with a CIA Agent that you can do with some Toy Factory worker. Similarly, Hayley and Steve have built-in conflicts with Stan that serve to immediately create plots and jokes. while the Griffins don't really have a naturally intrinsic dynamic between characters.
