I like that Tie fighters didn't change much. The AK-47 hasn't changed much. The idea behind the two are similar. Mass produced weapons that work.

Maybe the only thing I liked about prequels is the idea that the empire's military used to be republic's. Or that jedi used to flight in prototypes of TIE fighter. I must admit I liked that twist at the time.

With the exception of the 'new' X-Wing (it's actually just McQuarrie's split-engine design from around 1975), I don't think anything I've seen from TFA looks anywhere near as cool design-wise as the stuff from the prequels.

The phase one clone troopers especially look way better, in pure design terms at least, to me than the new stormtroopers.
>>
>>63210071
It's cause the empire refused to give any ships a paint job.
>>

>>
>>63210128
The prequel gear was hit or miss for me, but at least they took a chance on being original. It looks like in TFA they're just playing it safe and trying to land nostalgia points with the fans.

You mean the AK series. The AK-47 specifically refers to the rifle first made in 1947.
>>

I keep staring at them and I think that the head is probably in a retracted mode. Like I'm thinking that it can extend out and swivel left and right.

The droids were a great stormtrooper surrogate. Literal disposable cheap cannon fodder.

It's a shame the clones ended up all being dubious CGI, this armour design is god-tier. Love the pulp sci-fi Rocketeer-esque fin on the helmet.
>>
>>63210128
Prequel Ships all looked awesome, with the worst looking being the Naboo Starfighter (still like it, btw, just not as good as say, the droid ship or the clone transport).

Prequel war machine was pretty well designed, with being interesting and unique. Shame that the movies themselves were garbage.
>>
>>63210128

Yeah but with the prequel stuff, they went too far in a few places.

Like the rate of cool new gear was too high in the prequels. And the rate of change on that gear was also too high.

More expensive, thus makes more sense to utilize them sparingly. But they employ them frequently during the Clone Wars in high stakes situations.
>>
>>63209683
I like the prequel designs more on everything but the x-wing. Something about the simplicity behind the x-wing makes it so alluring.

That being said, if people are complaining about the design of the tie-fighter, perhaps its something along the lines of how fighter planes changed from ww2 to cold war. Sure, there was a large gap of rapidly advancing tech (ww2 with prop planes to jets), but now there's a decline (having an F-15 as your go-to plane for 40 god damn years).

For all the shit that the prequels did wrong, you gotta admit that they did the ships, lore, atmosphere, and settings just right.

All we really got to see in the original was what? Tattooine, Hoth, Endor and the Deathstar. The prequels built a miniature universe which pretty much created most of the canon Star Wars lore

Of course, there were a few misses like the michdichlorians and the rule of two and what not

Looks pretty cool, but it flares up my autism.

For one, why even have those 'X' wings on it? They dont do anything. They dont have engines on them, or guns. Its hard to imagine those being significant to its maneuverability.

Also the front end looks dumb. Maybe make it more modest, or pointier.

Im just saying it could be way cooler.

>>
>>63210958
Yeah I'm glad the prequels exist simply for the worldbuilding they did.

You're right - in the OT we basically never see the "civilized" parts of the universe. There's Mos Eisley, some rebel bases, the Ewok village. Mostly remote or run down outskirts.

The most civilized and inhabited location in the OT - Cloud City - actually looks a lot like the locations in the prequels.
>>
>>63211019

> clunky

Its not clunky, its pointless. Its like the feature was implemented to the vehicle before it was useful.

Right? Like, the bolt action rifle is a refinement of musket technology, but at least both managed to shoot bullets. What if we made a historical fiction film where rifles were just metal poles that werent hollow, and bullets came out of a hole in the woodstock. It would just be confusing to think about why they even had a feature before it apparently did anything.

Different companies. I think the Republic models were built by Rothana Heavy Engineering, which was a subsidiary of Kuat Drive Yards. The Empire mainly used Kuat Drive Yards or sometimes used Telgorn or Incom Corporation

Pic related, an Incom Coporation AT-AT barge theta class

Kuat Drive Yards built the AT-ATs and Star Destroyers, as well as the Clone Ships used by the Clones. The Empire and Sheev invested 50 Quadrillion credits into KDY, making KDY the bulk of the Imperial Fleets ship
providers

The DS1-Orbital Station (Death Star) was manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems. SFS got the design from Genosian Industries. Count Dooku originally was in charge of production of the DS-1. The DS-1 was designed by the Genosians as a tool to use against Sheev. Dooku gave the design unknowingly to Sheev, who later used the design. This was after Darth Vader requested his own Star Destroyed Dreadnaught from KDY, and KDY refused, which upset Sheev grealy. SFS also built the Tie-Fighters

Whoops, I meant: Darth Vader requested his own Super Star Destroyer Drednaught from KDY. He wanted to use it to hunt down rebellions. KDY wouldn't create one for him, which upset Sheev, and ended up ultimately losing the favor of Sheev. But it wouldn't matter because both Vader and Sheev would die, and virtually so would KDY after the empires collapse

Actually...

Sheev Palpatine and Seinar Fleet Systems creates Darth Maul's Scimitar Infiltrator, which evolved into the Tie Fighter

>Under the covert patronage of Senator Palpatine, Raith Sienar established Sienar Design Systems and its Advanced Projects Laboratory, which were apparently responsible for designing Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator: although Raith Sienar fiercely denied any connection to the craft, it does seem that it was connected to Advanced Projects designs, including the starfighter prototypes that would develop into the T.I.E. starfighter and early TIE series designs. By 29 BBY, Raith Sienar had also produced the original Expeditionary Battle Planetoid design that later became the Death Star. Even after the Clone Wars ended with the Declaration of a New Order in 19 BBY, the Sienar Fleet System, alongside Kuat Drive Yards, continued to produce warships, ground vehicles and other war machines at a quick pace, because of Palpatine's desire to extend Imperial rule throughout the civilized galaxy. This in turn led to the Reconquest of the Rim taking place from 19 BBY to 17 BBY.

I know people use this image as some sort of defense of the prequels but it actually works against it. The prequel designs look like exactly what they were meant to be, brand new ships to sell more toys with just the smallest hint back to the original trilogy to feign a connection where there isn't one. the Ep. VII designs are trying to be iterative by using the old concept art (which was more advanced looking in most cases) as a starting point to create plausible new versions of the old ships.

Keeping the bog-standard TIE design around is pretty stupid and they're only doing it to bank on ep. IV nostalgia but still I'd rather have TIE v.1.2 vs. w/e the fuck that thing is from the prequels that in no way at all looks related to a TIE fighter. All they did was put in a small version of the window and some little flaccid pop-up panels to trick idiots into thinking that it's a proto TIE-fighter.

You know except for the fact that it has a giant bubble canopy, is full of fucking air and is sitting on top of the rest of the ship.

That ship is also at best half the size of a TIE fighter, watch the movie again it's like the size difference between an A-wing and a Y-wing. It's a tiny, over-designed, almost completely unrelated ship that at the last minute got the iconic front window and some small panels to match the TIE fighter. It's the visual equivalent of those republic star-destoryers getting the grey paintjob at the end to say "look guys! star destroyers just like the ones in those good movies you like!"

>Rick McCallum offered McQuarrie a role as designer for the Star Wars prequel trilogy, but he rejected the offer, noting he had "run out of steam" and Industrial Light & Magic animator Doug Chiang was appointed instead. McQuarrie retired and his Star Wars concept paintings were subsequently displayed in art exhibitions, including the 1999 Star Wars: The Magic of Myth.[3] Several of McQuarrie's unused designs from the original trilogy were utilized for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels animated TV series,[11] including the planet Orto Plutonia, which was based on McQuarrie's original design of Hoth,[8] and the characters Zeb Orrelios and Chopper, based on his original designs for Chewbacca and R2-D2, respectively.[12][13] The influence of his original concept art can also be seen in the design of the X-Wing fighters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Ralph McQuarrie had nothing to do with the prequels. It's just that Lucas seems to be better at hiring artistic talent than Abrams.

It actually makes sense in a way.

If you consider the Knights of the Old Republic games for example, it seems the Star Wars universe has reached a point of zero innovation. Nobody in the universe seems to really understand how all of their amazing technology works, it's something that's been lost to the aeons. If they need to know anything, they have droids and archives for that. Even something like the Death Star is simply a novel application of millenia-old technology.

With that in mind, once the Jedi archives are destroyed between Episodes III and IV, and the war starts killing off the last few people who truly understand how all this shit works, technology would indeed start moving backwards as the knowledge of its workings is lost.

It specifically refers to the model that was created in 1947. They AK-47 Type 2A came out in '49, the 3A came out in '54, the 4A came out in '59, the upgraded replacement models, the AKM and RPK came out in 57 and 61...

....and the AK-103 came out in 1994

And of the over 400 million Kalishnikov's in the world, around 300 million of them are 47's. Most of the AKs being made today (by knockoff companies) are either custom 47s or AKMs.
