There was a fairly interesting thread about Blockbuster yesterday, and I feel like talking about it some more.

So Blockbuster Nostalgia/Memories/Hate thread.

Or just any video store you went to as a kid/teen

Who here rented different things all the time and who just rented the Digimon Movie 200 times?

I watched my girlfriend fuck a black man behind a Blockbuster in 1997. Ask me anything.
>>
The reason I loved Blockblister is because I loved just browsing for something that looked funny or cool, not knowing what any of it was. And while you can do that with Netflix now, there is such a limited fucking selection.

There was a blockbuster next to the safeway my mom would go shopping at. Everytime she brought me, I would always walk to the blockbuster and browse the movies while she shopped. It's a VHS. It's an analog tape. They can tell how often you've spooled through and rewinded it.

Same for copies. They can't tell you've copied a VHS (it'll just appear as another playthrough) but they CAN tell a copied VHS is a second-generation copy.

The video store I lived by as a kid had a comic book shop attached to it. The guy who ran it taught me how to play drums and his wife would smoke me out when I came over to their house. She was also an outstanding artist who taught me a lot about the subject. Those people had an overwhelming influence on me during my formative years. They took me to my first punk rock show, and taught me many things. I love those guys.

We grew up in Saginaw Texas tho
There was this mom n pop store called blazing video

We never rented from there but i remember during the summers we would ride our bikes up to the store and just look at all the box covers of styrofoam VHS cases

3 best things i remember from that store
1. Buying independence day from there (still have the VHS)
2.buying popcorn and riding our bikes up to our elementary school to swing
3. The store sold pokemon and yugioh cards. First pokemon card ever was a magnemite first booster pack was metal raiders

Felt like a badass when i got my first booster pack and got PIC RELATED

I was born in '89. Even as a kid I found Blockbuster pretty off-putting and artificial. Maybe it was the way they had empty video covers on display in front of multiple VHS copies in those sterile-looking Blockbuster clamshell cases, but I always preferred the local mom-'n-pop video stores and the smaller chains like Premieres Video.

I used to rent videos all the time up until... middle school I guess. I'm as guilty as anybody for the death of the video rental industry. When I went off to college, there were two local video stores and I never rented from either of them because I didn't want to register a fucking membership with them. One of them went out of business, the other one is still going but they regularly have outdoor sales trying to clear out their remaining stock. I've collected a lot of DVDs and blurays for dirt cheap from them.

I worked at a blockbuster 10 years ago,and supposedly it was haunted. I never saw anything but 3 different managers and a half dozen other employees swear they saw some freaky shit at night when the store was closed.

I was an employee in 2004 and during Christmas we were encouraged to wear this button.

Here's the script that came with it.

CUSTOMER: What does your pin mean?

EMPLOYEE: I'll tell you for one dollar!

CUSTOMER: Okay!

EMPLOYEE: It stands for "Your Curiosity Just Cost You A Dollar!" and now we'll donate that dollar to help kids stay curious in school!

...it always seemed kinda weird to cheat the customer out of their money for a good cause. Like why make them feel stupid for donating? You'll notice I kept the button for the last 11 years because it makes me laugh.
