I'm 43. I think it's very likely YOU are the youngster. Back in the day when Seinfeld aired any actual decent intellectual thought of it as trash, on par with today's reality TV. It's more self-aware than other sitcoms of its time, but it's still a sitcom. Self-aware garbage is still garbage.
Really, the reason for Seinfeld's popularity is how it resonates with nihilistic narcissists. In two ways:
1) Those who unabashedly identify with how terrible the characters are
2) Those who shake their heads and derive amusement from how misguided the characters are, which is ironically its own kind of nihilistic, self-gratifying narcissism masquerading as being level-headed.

So many people praise the first season and refer to it as the best but I fucking hate the first season. The lead actress is awful and reality-tv desperate-housewives-tier whose entire schtick is looking indignant and affronted and shaking her head in a rich white actress way. It's the worst broadcasting of non-emotion I've ever seen. The school shooter stuff was both way too edgy and weirdly tame, and the husband character had zero charm.
Every single subsequent season is way better.

Community season 1 is vastly better than season 2. It may not have hit the highs of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons but the worst episode was a 7/10 while season 2 had plenty of 4s and 5s.
