That feel when Phantom Menace has better CGI than AoC and RoTS

So Lucas just gave up?
>>
>>63191913

It was shot on film. That's why it still holds up in comparison to AotC which is basically drenched in fucking green screen.

Shot on film, more reliance of intercutting animatronics, matte paintings, real locations and props in with the actors and the CGI instead of just shooting 90% of it in a Green screen studio and let the CGI animators handle the rest without even reliance on stand in footage or mocap.

Yes. Lucas did it all by himself on his laptop.
>>

Cool, now post the jedi temple sets, the clone armors, and all those model ships they built for the end of episode II and the start of episode III
>>
>>63193900
Most of that is Episode I stuff, and a lot of that was built wasn't used in film, rather used as reference for the CGI animators.

nah, he just decided everything needed to be cg so there was way more work to do on II and III while less effort was made on each individual shot. quantity replaced quality.
>>
>>63192188

The problem isnt the lack of animatronics, props etc and all that. Well they are diminished in 2 and 3, its more so that the digital composition of every shot is just piss poor.

AOTC especially has aged horribly

Actually, there is something to this. Not that it was shot on film, but it was mastered on film, meaning all the CGI effects were optically printed. It messes with the colors and the contrast a bit. You'd think that isn't necessarily such a good thing, but it makes the matching of the CGI and real elements all look a little more coherent. If you've ever noticed a difference between effects in the 90s and the 00s, besides improvement in fidelity, it's this. Once everything went digital, they went to town with how bright and vivid they could make everything.

Also just generally, fewer CGI effects in a movie means they can put more effort into them.
>>
>>63195133
GOAT level on battlefront 2
>>
>>63196288
this.

Jurassic Park (and all films shot in the 90s) had their computer effects printed onto an internegative intermediary format, which was then developed into a regular work print for cinemas.

So computer graphics were still processed as celluloid effects at the end of the day.
>>
So let me get this straight, the reason AoTC and RoTS look like shit isn't because everything is bad CGI (I've seen the making of AoTC, they worked miracles with CG for 2002), but because Lucas insisted on shooting everything digitally with shitty 2000's digital cameras?
>>
>>63196922
That's not the sole reason, but a major contributor.

It's also the reason AotC will never be seen in anything higher than 1080p.
>>
>>63196922
that and he pushed the color saturation to cartoon levels. I'm all against grimdark grey, but both those films look like zany saturday morning adventure serials.

Episode 1 had a more mature palette.

It's a fascinating insight into the making of three much-discussed films.

I'll take that over another dubs/Baneposting/Sheevposting thread.

There are alot of shots of actors where you can tell they're in front of a green screen in ep 2 and 3 but if you think 1 has the better cgi your absolutely blind. The difference in quality from 1 to 3 is huge.
>>
>>63195222
Yeah, that was what I was saying

>>63195222
That was what I've been claiming from the start. Thread starts with the question why AotC and RotS look so much worse than the Phantom Menace. I gave answers that have been repeatedly mistaken for me saying that it was this bad in Phantom Menace as well.

hate to deflate your fedora but only a couple of shots were done digitally, and they ended up being composites, i.e. not purely digital.

The HD camera they used was completed near the end of production, so Lucas only used it to see what the quality was like.

>That Summer, a series of scenes for Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace were shot on stage in London, with Sony's HDC-750 high definition camera (in the 1920x1035/60i format). Digital recordings were made on both the new HDCAM® format and the baseband HDD-1000 VTR. Evaluations were made of both recording formats transferred to 35mm film. Some of the scenes have been incorporated into the movie, constituting a ''real-world'' test of the technology, as well as creating a prelude to the plan for use of the 24 frame progressive HD system in shooting Star Wars Episode II, which begins in Spring 2000.

The most noticeable shot is at the end parade. The final final shot of BLUBLUBLU guy holding up the orb was digital composite.

here. notice the severe purple fringing (chromatic abberation) and blotchy highlights? That's a telltale sign of early digital.

although this is from a remastered bluray so who knows if it was touched up a bit.
