Gandalf's magic is typically subtle.
It was the sun that turned the trolls to stone, Gandalf simply used his magic to split the boulder between the trolls and the stone.
If Gandalf were a DnD Wizard, he would be based entirely in Abjuration(protective spells), Evocation(subtle energy manipulation) and Divination.
By comparison, Saruman and the Blue Wizards were more offensively skilled wizards.
