I really love how almost none of the characters have hair covering their eyes and they all manage to look normal while completely different.
I'm interest in LGH but I'm not a huge fan of animu and the length and /pol/ memes turn me off. I'm /pol/ as fuck but I've learned that /pol/ has literally no concept of objective quality and praises the shit out of anything that panders to them so the LGH worship turns me off.
I started it and am 10 episodes in atm.
Not that great till now but I hope it piicks up.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is inarguably the greatest anime ever made. Reinhard and Yang Wen-Li are still the most striking, completely different and yet noble, well developed characters. I sympathized for both sides.

Manga/Anime/Japanese video games and light/visual novels used to be driven onwards by enthusiastic nerds that took inspiration from all over the globe (very often Hollywood science fiction, fantasy and horror cinema) and were using the mediums available to them to be creative. Would have done so in others like film if that was more readily available to them at the time (in fact, about half of Japanese video game developers that started out in the 80s wanted to go into film but couldn't because of oversaturation). Legend of the Galactic Heroes lacks any creativity in terms of visual direction, has really bad exposition. Most of the characters, especially the villains are pretty bland and one-dimensional. Which sometimes can be pulled off, but not for a series that went for this kind of realistic feel. The story really lacks subtlety sometimes and will pull off really dumb shit to prove its point. The only real reason to watch it was Yang and some of blondie's subordinates, cause they were somewhat more entertaining characters.

I agree. The shows you mentioned at least feel like they were created as animated shows. With LotGH it's as if someone just copied parts from the good, together with even the narration and then lazily put some recycled drawings in a power point presentation. What it wanted to achieve might have worked slightly better in live-action with the use of good actors, but when it's just head stills with only opening and closing mouths and no visual direction besides that it looks terrible.
But even with those series you mentioned, I think of it more as a period that anime had to go through, then take a look back at itself and use it to di something better. Hell, Tomino did that himself with Turn A.

I don't get this "LotGH is a masterpiece" meme. I've watched the first movie and about 100 episodes and, while good enough for me to keep watching, it's no masterpiece.
First of all, the animation in the action scenes is just horrible. Luckily there are few of them, but any time somebody puts on one of those stormtrooper outfits and goes into an ax battle the animation turns to crap. Screenshots of the show only look good most of the time because about 9/10ths of entire show is stationary shots of people talking where they only animate the mouth.
Frequently the show will randomly shift gears from a decent political story to a saturday morning cartoon show. Any episode involving those KKK wannabe guys or the Earth Cult was just horrible, with comical villains and masked enemies, like I was suddenly watching G. I. Joes.
It seems like a major plot hole to me that the emperor Reinhard is considered a military genius, when literally he only has one military victory where he's the commander in his entire career, and afterwards it's just a string of losses with superior numbers against Yang. Every victory is his subordinates. Why is this fucker considered a military genius? Just for his one victory in the movie?
It gets pretty tiresome how about half of every episode int he second half of the series is dedicated to Reinhard lusting after his dead boyfriend while everybody else cries about how much they miss Yang.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I feel like a lot of the plot is ripped off from The Foundation series of novels.
Literally the only good thing about this series is the personalities and the interactions of the admirals. That's all. And it doesn't make up enough of the show.

Throughout the entire show, Utena was just as deluded and selfish as the rest of the cast. That was the point. She was looking at Anthy as an object to save, not taking notice of her own feelings and psychological trauma. She tried to be both the prince to Anthy and the princess to her prince. Thing is Utena formed a dependence on this fairy tale role to cope with her existential angst and suicidal thoughts after her parent's death. That's why she goes along with every carzy thing in the show. She's a flawed human being and the finale is basically her growing up and letting go of the binary construct of prince/princess to forge her own identity. All the characters in the end are in that same process and will likely leave the school eventually except for Akio who happens to be content with his position. That's the main difference between him and the rest of the cast. Akio was actively manipulating everyone in the show, especially Utena. It doesn't help with his uncanny resemblance to the prince in her childhood.

She wants to save Anthy but what she really does is she just rescues her, which isn't the same.
