Once Jay Leno left, they would've put the Jimmy Fallon Cuddle Hour in his timeslot. Conan didn't get shafted because NBC loves Jay Leno, he got shafted because NBC has been in panic mode for almost a decade now and they didn't trust that Conan would be able to build the Tonight Show viewership to full capacity once he settled in.
He's barely getting by as is.

At the same time, if you don't feel like your network is 100% behind you and is still making you 2nd fiddle to the real ratings breadwinner, why stay? The NBC top brass at the time didn't like Conan or his humor anyway. They all left soon after the debacle, so we'll never know if they would've still tried to undermine a Conan show.
