people dont realize this but we have yet to have ray tracing in real time which is a basis for rendering any offline realistic models
then we have per pixel displacemnt mapping and gpu ram that is required to render this
as of now we still dont even have simple tesselation algortims in game yet alone anything accurate, and while offline renderers can take 10 terabytes of data and just focus on one pixel at a time a realitime renderer has to preload all of that into the gpu memory
displacement mapping is especially important as it become increasingly impossible to rig or animate models that are above 100k tris, it becomes a nightmare to menage and rigging becomes more and more problematic, by the time you hit half a mln even uv mapping becomes something that will take days instead of minutes for a modeler
normal maps can take you only so far
yeah 20 years seems about right. I expect we will see first ray tracing or path tracing attempts for a game in 5 years, it will become widespread in 10 and standard in 15, alongside with other advances we should be able to reproduce this in real time by then
