Hearing about shit and actually seeing it yourself are two different things.
>>
>>63127845

Gandalf isn't really stronger, they're about equal. Also, gandalf doesn't really look like a threat given that he looks like an old man.
>>
>>63127804
>>63127804

IIRC it was that way in the book

+Legolas may be a couple thousands years old, but balrogs presumably werent around in the open since the first age

Gandalf may be stronger, technically, we dont know.
He was actually nerfed before he came to middle earth, because he was not supposed to fight.

by Feanor, actually, thouh Manwe was in attendance and basically rolled with it, it just happened to stick amongst the elves because people listened to what Feanor had to say.

This is wrong though. The canon doesn't know how old Legolas is.

>In its right hand was a blade like a stabbing tongue of fire; in its left it held a whip of many thongs.
‘Ai! ai!’ wailed Legolas. ‘A Balrog! A Balrog is come!’ Gimli stared with wide eyes. ‘Durin’s Bane!’ he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
‘A Balrog,’ muttered Gandalf. ‘Now I understand.’ He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. ‘What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.’
>>
>>63130748
Jackson gave him an age ~3000 years old, I think.

But in the books there are no actual birth dates for Legolas. I always just assumed he was born sometime in the third age and was quite young, Like Elladan and Elrohir.
>>
>>63130152
Because he was afraid of that which was below

Im not even joking, there was some serious Lovecraftian shit going on down that made both Gandalf and the Balrog shit their pants while trying to make their way out of the darkness and tunnels they had left behind.

ARAGORN GIVES THEM SOMETHING TO FOLLOW INSTEAD OF MERELY HOLDING ON AND SO THEY FOLLOW HIM TO RELIEVE MINAS TIRITH. THE MEN OF GONDOR. THE REGULAR ASS MEN OF GONDOR WHO ARE FRAIL AND WEAK AND HUMAN. NOT THE GHOSTS, WHO DON'T EVEN FUCKING FIGHT IN THE BOOKS BUT INSTEAD MAKE THE CORSAIRS SHIT THEIR PANTALOONS. BUT HEY, NO IT'S FINE THAT THEY NOW COMPLETELY MASSACRE THE ORCS INSTEAD OF ALLOWING THE HUMAN MEN WHO ARE SUPPOSEDLY WEAK AND FEEBLE AND BARELY EVEN KILL ORCS (WHILST BEING SLAUGHTERED BY THEM WHENEVER THE CAMERA IS POINTED THEIR DIRECTION) AND SHOW THAT GONDOR AND ROHAN (HUMAN MEN) ARE STRONG AND WILL FIGHT TILL THE END.

You're not.

Remember when Wormtongue stabs Saruman in the back, and they say his spirit rises up in a mist, looks to the west, and then gets blown away by a stiff breeze?

The one ring, which posessed part of Sauron's power, was the only thing that let him survive the ruin of numenor, and even then he was limited in his form because there was nothing "fair" in the power he trapped in the ring.

Anyone else who dies, needs the Valar to intercede before they are brought back (Beren and Luthien, or Mandos letting an elf soul be reborn in a new body).

pls god help me lads I posted this in a lotr thread before and no one knew what I was talking about.

I could have swore I saw some sort of trivia here involving a poem j.r.r tolkein wrote basically from the perspective of frodo after the events of the books. He goes to the undying lands but the morgul blade wound never heals and the beings there avoid him. He goes back to middle earth but no ones recognizes him and realize something is wrong with him so he is shunned there too.

I thought it was called fredas song or something like that.

He fell down he great chasm left by the mithril mining, eventually crashed into an underground lake. The balrog climbed out of the lake and fled into tunnels (supposed created by other creatures down in the deeps) gandalf followed it. The balrog knew the tunnels and sought out the Endless Stair which led from the deepest levels to the summit of Celebdil (one of the thre peaks of moria). Gandalf followed all the way up the stair and the balrog reignited its flame as it reached the summit.

Basically
fell in lake, found tunnels, found giant stairway, climbed to stair to tower.

By the way Sauron confirmed as the Eye in the book as well. Just not as prominent as in the movie

>but torn by some gust of wind out of the world, or else moved by some great disquiet within, the mantling clouds swirled, and for a moment drew aside; and then he saw, rising black, blacker and darker than the vast shades amid which it stood, the cruel pinnacles and iron crown of the topmost tower of Barad-dûr. One moment only it stared out, but as from some great window immeasurably high there stabbed northward a flame of red, the flicker of a piercing Eye; and then the shadows were furled again and the terrible vision was removed. The Eye was not turned to them: it was gazing north to where the Captains of the West stood at bay
>>
>>63132100

That's why I'm baffled that it's taken so long. The lore and locations are already there, and it's an extremely popular genre coupled with an extremely popular brand. There was one possibly in development years ago, but if it was what we're talking about then it got cancelled.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings:_The_White_Council

It's like they hate money.
>>
>>63132100
I think Christopher Tolkien is being a Jew about the rights to the books since he hated the movies (or didn't get paid as much as he wanted).

So since the lotr franchise is basically paralleling the star wars franchise, do you think in 10 years hackson will sell the rights and we'll see a new trilogy that picks up after rotk?
>>
>>63132179
i don't mean christopher tolkien when i say the rights. i think warner brothers has the rights to create LOTR video games and they don't exactly have a strong RPG record. they would likely have to contract it out to another studio to develop and they probably don't want to lose that share of the profit.

BASED JACKSON

Zaentz was peripherally involved in the controversy about who would make a live-action film version of The Hobbit, because of his ownership of the film rights to the novel. Peter Jackson, who directed the successful The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, was the first person scheduled to direct The Hobbit.

However, Jackson's production company Wingnut Films questioned New Line Cinema's accounting methods, bringing in an outside auditor as allowed by the contract, and eventually sued New Line. New Line executive Robert Shaye took great offense, declared that they would never work with Jackson again, and began looking for another director.

Jackson said that he could not work on the film until the lawsuit was settled, and that he was apparently off the project indefinitely. MGM, which owns the distribution rights, was more hopeful that a deal could be worked out.

No, that's nonsense. The Eye in the books is stated outright to be a metaphor for his will. Plenty of times in the books they talk about Sauron as if having a physical form- Gollum outright says he saw where his missing finger was when he was captured.

Why should Legolas BE in the Hobbit though. Have you even read it? They are in Mirkwood for a literal chapter - if that, and the whole time the dwarves are in prison and Bilbo is looking for the ring, in the book this takes months and is a huge time skip eventually.

You're literally a pleb here is how it went.

>Thranduil appears in The Hobbit
>plays large-ish role
>His son appears in the sequel

SO UNBELIEVABLE, maybe you should read a book?
>>
>>63132547

>In fact with every step towards the gates of Mordor Frodo felt the Ring on its chain about his neck grow more burdensome. He was now beginning to feel it as an actual weight dragging him earthwards. But far more he was troubled by the Eye: so he called it to himself. It was that more than the drag of the Ring that made him cower and stoop as he walked. The Eye: that horrible growing sense of a hostile will that strove with great power to pierce all shadows of cloud, and earth, and flesh, and to see you: to pin you under its deadly gaze, naked, immovable.

It means Sauron was literally standing in his tower focusing his will upon the north. Or using a Palantir even.

It's self explanatory...

Frodo would simply replace Sauron with Galadriel, that was a HUGE test for her, she was offered the ring and she refused it, the only other characters to do this are Aragorn and Faramir.

It's canonical that to resist the ring you must of of an extremely high calibre.

she doesn't immediately leave because her fate is tied to the One ring. when it is destroyed she leaves in the end which is shown.

riddle me this, tolkienfags. in the hobbit, gandalf knew bilbo had a ring of power. why did he do nothing about it for 60 fucking years? is gandalf stupid? he already knew that Sauron had returned because he fought him at dol'gudur and yet he did nothing.

obvious answers:

>he didnt know it was the one ring
so? its still a ring of power

>he knew the ring would be safe with bilbo
but he still had every opportunity to destroy the ring before sauron regained strength and reclaimed mordor

he didn't have the same ideals as Melkor at heart, he was originally a Maia under Aule and liked creating things, but Melkor was able to persuade him in large part because Sauron (then Mairon, literally meaning the admirable) saw the Valar as wasteful and inefficient, and saw the strength in Melkor to the run the world in an orderly way. I don't think he fully realized that Melkor's end goal was omnicide, and kind of just got caught up on things.
tl;dr Sauron was autistic

Not really. Melkor basically wanted to wipe out everything. Sauron's the one who actually wanted to rule it instead.

>>63133256

There were plenty of rings of power. Eregion was full of them once. Not all of them were just the ones spoken of in that "nine for mortal men, seven for dwarf lords, three for elf kings, one for the Dark Lord" verse.
>>
>>63133256
>gandalf knew bilbo had a ring of power.
He didn't though. He knew he had a magic ring. He spent most of the intervening time investigating shit gandalf style.

He started to get suspicious about Bilbo's long life and reaction when he bequeathed the ring. He took off for gondor and began researching every piece of obscure ringlore he could find, before eventually finding Isildur's own writings. He described the ring as simple, gold, unadorned, and burning hot. He also saw the runes with the poem.

Gandalf shits his pants, and runs back to the shire as fast as he can to test the ring. As soon as they verify what it is, he takes off again and starts the ball rolling.
>>
>>63133368
>He definitely knew he had a ring of power for some time before he started investigating, rings of power are the only ones that extend your life.

What? This isn't even close to being right. Even so -

Tolkien has stated that Eru has no physical presence on Arda. I personally think that his being is more than likely a byproduct of the music, as are the nameless things, which I think makes sense as it its with his claim of being "oldest and fatherless", as well as the nameless things being "older than Sauron", if you interpret their being created with Arda, before the Ainur descended down into it. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he is the embodiment of the music itself though.

Tolkien never settled on a final explanation for how the orc came into being, other than that they were created by Melkor obviously, but if you go with the interpretation that they were created through the corruption of elves, which is one of the more popular ones, then they would biologically be extremely similar to elves, would reproduce the same way as elves, through fucking each other, would also be immortal, and would probably even go to the same Halls of Mandos when they die. And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined.'
