1. The cinematography is great

this. when people talk about how the show is just "liberal agenda pushed to its maximum expression" or some shit, they don't realize that yes, the show has strong themes of liberal topics such as segregation/social recognition of black people, immigration, women's rights and so on; but the way it is presented is precisely what makes this show stand out as one of the better television series.
The cinematography coupled with the more or less historical accuracy of the depicted events makes the show so damn believable that it doesn't need to shove above mentioned themes in your face. Everything is told through the world, the characters and their stories.

That should clue you in to the fact that OP was just talking shit. The show has the elements he points out, but not in the way he characterizes them. OP is making it sound like everything is one dimensonal and that Soderbergh is pushing this shit in your face, but that's not happening.
All of the characters are leveled and have conflict. The slutty nurse is new to being slutty because of Thackery, but she's also extremely smart and has her own agenda. She clearly has desires to be a doctor. Not to mention her complex background.
The "nigga" wasn't the one complaining and he didn't call the owner racist. In fact, he continually defends his adoptive father figure and tolerates much of the inequality. It was his wife (who he doesn't like) that raised the issue.
The nun is conflicted about her practices and she still is a devoted member of the church, but has to reconcile her desire to help women with church doctrine.
Hooligan with a heart of gold. Yeah, that's a cliche, but I personally like his character.

What about her isn't normal? She's looking into the death of a friend, would you be complaining if this was any other character? She's known Algernon her whole life, it's perfectly reasonable that they have a deep relationship.

You guys get it. The show is an exploration of all of those themes, they are not shoehorned in there to be "liberal". The characters and world of 1900 were dealing with these things on a daily basis. The only thing that has felt slightly unnatural to me so far is Cleary and Harry's condom venture, but I'm more than willing to give that a pass, it seems like they are just having as much fun as possible with those two characters.
