What are some good Lovecraftian movies?
There are none. Read the stories.
Essential Lovecraft:
>In the Mouth of Madness
>From Beyond
>Re-Animator
>Dagon
>Necronomicon
Those are the good ones
>>63112104
I am.
Why are there none?
What are good movies with lovecraftian themes then?
>>63112094
In the mouth of madness.
Event Horizon.
>>63112142
His stuff doesn't translate well to screen. Nobody competent has seriously to adapt his work. It's kind of a niche. In the Mouth of Madness.
stuart gordon's films are great, but they really aren't at all like his work
in the mouth of madness is a bit closer but the effect of lovecraft's writing is just not replicable in another medium
Mountains of Madness would be a great film imo
>>63112094
Re-animator is top tier
>>63112248
That´s a shame, I think that his stories could work really well with modern cinema.
>>63112213
>Event Horizon

Literally three movies with based Combs.
Sea gf general?
>>63112312
>best lovecraft adaptation is some horror schlock he churned out when he needed cash
kek
The first Hellboy had somewhat lovcraftian elder gods.
Also Rasputins final form.
Dagon isn't bad. I always thought shadow over innsmouth was one of the few lovecraft stories with real tension
>>63112129
you forgot The Resurrected
>>63112336
source?
>>63112142
Lovecraft's main theme is that humans turn out to be totally insignificant. Movie suggestions:
No Country For Old Men
Andrei Rublev
Aguirre, Wrath of God
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Koyaanisqatsi
For a nice "cosmic horror" movie, check out John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness.
>>63112333
Yeah, he's a great actor and I love most of his movies that I've seen. He has a very large filmography and television shows which he has acted in, there's plenty I haven't seen.
>>63112142
Sadly most people seem to think lovecraft=tentacles. While a lot of his stories deals more about the horror of the unknown and are fairly reminiscent of more classic Gothic tales.
David Bowie - Blackstar
>>63112313
>something so awful he doesnt even try to describe it, often making that the point of the text using loose terms like "otherworldly" or "the mere sight drove him mad"
>film adaptation
The only thing that could work some small scale cult with some small time priest. Trying to touch the elder gods or other famous entities is simply not possible in a visual media because of the method used in the writing.
Fuck cosmic horror
I want a dream cycle movie
>>63112517
Check out The Dark Crystal
>>63112142
>Why are there none?
would you want to watch a movie about a guy shuffling through newspaper clippings and interviewing sailors, where the climax is that he learned something horrible already happened
>>63112291
I think(hope) we will live to see a mountains of madness film. It was planned and canned a few years ago.
>>63112484
I think you could do it if you were clever enough to use the "dont show the monster" technique which always makes for the better horror film.
Just build suspense like a mother fucker. When you finally show the monster, make it an actual puppet in really shitty lighting, dont even show the whole thing for a half-second. Dont just do a CGI hamfest
This, kinda.
>>63112528
Never seen it, I'll give it a shot
>>63112559
It's such a great setting and more of an adventure/Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider type story than horror.
I can imagine great scenes of them bumbling around in a 1920s piece of shit airplane flying around Antartica, seeing the crazy green mountains. Introduce a few minor charactors. Told in 1st person narration like the book, heavy musical pieces especially as they describe the history of the ayy lmaos
It would be like Disney's Atlantis for grown men. Absolutely based.
>>63112559
The director of such terror-inducing films as Pacific Rim and Hellboy II was set to direct a butchered adaptation.
http://www.therobotsvoice.com/2015/01/7_reasons_we_dont_need_guillermo_del_toro_at_the_mountains_of_madness_lovecraft.php
>>63112651
fuck. No thank you.
I'd ask for Ridley Scott but honestly, his past few movies miss the mark so much.
It's like he gets the atmosphere but everything after that is full potato
Get the guy who filmed Under the Skin
>>63112596
this, or make the scenes first person, seen thru the main characters eyes, and whenever he tries to glance at it, his vision blurrs, his ears start to ring etc.
You only get to see minor details of the abominations
Bloodborne.
>>63112411
It's in the filename
>>63112618
What a great found footage movie that was
Dreams in the Witch House is a pretty good Masters of Horror episode based on his story "Rats in the Walls".
>>63112129
>>63112213
>>63112248
>In the Mouth of Madness
Get out.
>>63112720
That kind of filming only works for vidya and FOUND FOOTAGE movies, which this story predates.
You could still do that though if you were filming 3rd person. Just show the character's reactions and still do the special effects so the audience knows their heads are getting fucked up
>>63112094
the octopus porn i made with your mother
well this may be more /co/ related but I'm downloading the new issue of Providence as I write this.
Supposedly the Herbert West issue.

>>63112747
What the hell?
That's like making a film called Batman that is based on the Superman comics. Why would they take the title of one of his other books while basing it on another?
>>63113022

That's like saying Thor is Lovecraftian because it's about deep space and fear of the unknown
>>63112315
Movie has extra-dimensional horrors that get off on pain and torture.
Is The Mist Lovecraftian?
>>63113499
Not really.
>>63113481
>get off on pain and torture
not lovecraftian.
lovecraftian creatures don't give a fuck about humanity, except maybe as food or cannon fodder. why bother torturing something that's already gone mad from looking at you?
>>63112094
Sure is pleb in here. The only two patrician choices are Dagon and the hidden gem Dark Waters (1993).
>>63113499
For the most part, no.
I found it dumb in that movie that in other dimensions they just had spiders, mosquitos flies and crabs.
The tentacle monster and the huge ones in the mist were cool, though.
Cabin In The Woods is Lovecraftian even though it's also a comedy. It's Kafkaesque too. fight me.
>>63113561
>Cabin In The Woods
Pure comedy crap flick. No sense of dread, the uncanny, etc. A HP film should never, ever have comedy in it. That's why re-animator and beyond are shit, too. Crappy B films that don't take the source material seriously.
Begotten
>>63113599
I think you're taking Lovecraft too seriously.
>muh cyclopean unnamable horror
>>63113637
Do you watch horror films to laugh? LEL. Stick to American Pie.
I feel there should be way more contemporary lovcaftian movies. It's such a rich field.
>>63112336
Fuck, why can't I have an Uxia of my own?
Midnight Meat Train
The Ring
Hitchcock's Birds
Spring
they could take place in HPL's universe
>>63113599
Not even Lovecraft took Re-animator seriously.
It's also not even part of his cosmic horror stories either so I don't see why would insist on it being humorless
>>63113616
edgy pleb tier film
>>63113713
Imma gonna watch this
Dogura Magura is the best I've seen. Good luck finding it though.
Banshee Chapter
It's heavily influenced by From Beyond. It's not the best movie ever, but I got some good spooks out of it.
>ctrl + f
>Evil Dead

They might not be 100% serious horror, but they have the Lovecraftian influences. There's even Necronomicon in them.
>>63112517
That resembles the Eastern Roman Empire more than a little bit.
Masters of Horror, S01E02, Dreams in the Witch House
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTZi8YJP8Xk
Masters of Horror is a anthology horror series where every episode is an independent horror story. There are some really shitty episodes, but then there's gold nuggets like this.
And just for the heck of it, two of my favorite episodes

Holy Moley! I didn't know, so I just spent the last ten minutes to watch that and do some research. I guess they edited it down to 9:57 because iTunes won't let you go over 10 to post.

>>63114274

>>63114326
Oh, it's all clear now
the resurrected is a good adaptation of the case of charles dexter ward, which is one of his best stories IMO
someone mentioned hellboy. while there are significant lovecraftian elements (adapted from the comics), the movies are very lighthearted adventures at the same time, more of a MIB meets lovecraft kind of thing.
for the real deal, I recommend the comics. they are much much darker, the art style is breathtaking, and it's the closest thing to genuine lovecraft i've seen outside of lovecraft.
>>63114199
yeah, it really is very good. check it out
>>63114343
nothing personal
>>63114383
Leddit made flesh. Fuck off
>>63114236
Mouth of Madness was Stephen King/Robert Bloch, not Lovecraft.
Could American Horror Story: Insmouth work? They could pull elements from other stories and not just Shadow Over Insmouth.
>>63114405
>that newfriend who tries to fit in by making "leddit bogeymen" accusations when his fee-fees get hurt
cute
>>63114345
if you are gonna talk comics, one should check out Alan Moore's THE COURTYARD. You can tell he was in a very bad mood while writing that. It's original Moore and it's strictly based on Lovecraft and has his stuff directly incorporated into it.
But this isn't a comic forum, this is /tv/, so...
>>63114345
I love CDW. The resurrected was a pretty good adaptation. A less schlocky Stuart Gordon-esque kind of movie.
>>63114462
No. AHS has become random scenes with no narrative structure to hold them together.
Always felt Peter Jacksons King Kong wouldve been a great Cthulu movie if King Kong was replaced with Cthulu (and the Ann Darrow/romance plot was removed entirely).
Just a team of filmmakers exploring a mysterious island with strange creatures and tribal cults
>>63114479
CDW is fucking great. Lovecraft spent time developing the backstory, the tension builds at a great pace and the chapter where he investigates the farmhouse is chilling.
>>63114475
>cats of ulthar

>In the Mouth of Madness
>>63112094
The original Alien is mildly Lovecraftian.

>>63114526
>(and the Ann Darrow/romance plot was removed entirely)
No way, I want to see which sentiment would win over nerds between rage over the butchering of Big C's "character", and joy over seeing implied tentacle porn in a mainstream movie.

Mountains of Madness had no shape-changing aliens or anything of the sort. It's about finding weird plant creatures and the city that they built, as well as something horrible beyond the mountain that probably wiped out their entire civilization.
The Color Out of Space was about an alien that looks like a living aurora borealis taking residence in a well, poisoning the water, causing crops to fail, and invading the minds of the farmers who it was feeding off of before it killed them.
In the Mouth of Madness is the closest to Lovecraft you can get. Don't be a fucking retard.

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove’s fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th’Olympian host conceiv’d a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

most people just think about Lovecraft stories are good because the monsters in them are ugly, but the real magic in the stories is, as you said, the horror of the unknown, and the insignificance of the humanity
Okay, so Lovecraft is my jam, wrote papers about him in high school, etc. I've seen just about every movie recommended here.
I'll throw out one you'd never suspect: The Violent Kind (2010). It's by the Butcher Brothers, who are pretty hit and miss. The Hamiltons was a hit, the remake of April Fools Day was a miss.
Anyway, it's a film that seems like one thing but turns into something else at the end. DEFINITELY Lovecraftian at the end.
