As someone who's never seen more than 20 minutes of any Star Wars film and has no interest in ever seeing The Force Awakens I'd argue that BB-8 > R2-D2 from a aesthetic standpoint. R2-D2's design is dumb as shit although I still like its "character" from what I know of it. BB-8 just seems like it'd be more entertaining to watch.
