The subjects of the documentary genuinely thought they were heroes for what they did. This was brainwashed into them. The director, in asking them to cater to their own vanity and play themselves, subtly manipulated each of the subjects into looking at their crimes from a different perspective, and viewing themselves as the monsters that they actually were.

Think for a second, why didn't he call them out on their bullshit, and movie inspirations was probably the most inane bullshit to call them out for.
The only time he directly intervenes is when Anwar Congo starts to say he could feel how it was like (when they are recreating a wire murder on him) and he goes "eeehhhh, no, you know this is a film, you know this wasn't real, the guys you murdered actually knew it was real, and that they were going to die" and you can pinpoint how his actions come down unto him in that very scene.
Also when he shows the scene to his grandchildren and they are disturbed as fuck, and he breaks down, and when he starts to violently vomit when he goes once again to that place where they killed thousands.
