Actually, that's relatively simple to answer:
Matter compressor shapes the garbage. Meaning no matter what gets thrown in there, and what shape it's in, it will be turned into a plate, that is well sized and shaped to slide out whatever ejector system they have, instead of clogging it up.
Imagine that huge beam getting stuck in the ejector system. That would give someone a shitty day. With the matter compressor though, it can fit through the same ejector tunnels everything else can.
