This is no doubt the big four of television.

I know a few of you would rather have Mad Men in there instead of Game of Thrones, but Mad Men, as good as it was, was never a phenomenon like these four shows are.

For the record, this isn't based on personal taste, but acclaim.
>>
>>63073766
3 reddit shows and a good one.

Game Of Thrones is obvious bait, you aren't pulling the wool over my eyes.

Even Breaking Bad has no business being there. As far as modern television is concerned, there are no "big four", it's more that The Wire and the Sopranos are the big two and then there's everything else. Deadwood, Mad Men and 6 Feet Under are the next step down.

Then comes the likes of Breaking Bad and the Shield.
>>
Replace Daenerys with Jon Snow. He is the hero of the TV show

Inclusion of GoT isn't bait though, is it?

Regardless of how much you think it's "Reddit shit" or "normie trash" or whatever buzzwords you want to use, it has surpassed the Sopranos in ratings. It's a fucking massive show. Yeah, the writers got a bit stupid in the last season, but that isn't the point.

Ask your average "normie" to name a character from Deadwood, SFU and Mad Men, and then ask them to name a character from BrBa and GoT. Yeah, exactly.
>>
>>63073766
The wire wasnt a phenomenon
>>
>>63073766
The Wire wasn't that popular when it aired
>>
>>63073876
Whereas Daenerys is something of an anti-heroine, and fits in with Walt, Tony and McNulty more than Jon would.
>>
>>63073889
Same.

I'm sure it's a great show, but I'm so not interested in it despite trying to start the show 5 times I just don't fucking care. I'll happily die never watching the supposedly best crime show ever made.
>>
>>63073903
>>63073907
No, but do you remember all the sudden hype about it shortly after it had ended? "Best show ever", "even better than The Sopranos", "get the boxset now"
>>
the only good show there was the wire
>>
>>63073895
I'm getting mixed messages. If you're going off ratings rather than quality then the Wire shouldn't be there. If we're talking quality then Game Of Thrones doesn't make the grade.

If we're talking about "successful" shows then why not slap the walking dead on there too?
>>
Replace whatever the fuck bottom left is with LOST.
>>
>>63073925
It's not a crime show. The crime on The Wire is just one part of the story.
>>
>>63073938

Like that other guy mentioned, LOST is a much better fit

reminder that mad men won best drama 4 times in a row before it was halted by amc for a year for no reason and lost its traction

i got a question for you /tv/, why is mad men so good? i can acknowledge that breaking bad is probably the biggest tv drama phenomenon of all time, but mad men's writing is just so incredibly normal and realistic yet engaging. there's not many things "out of the ordinary" but it's probably my favorite show.

No. Daenerys is a dumb cunt who is incapable of achieving anything. Everything she has she got because of her family name, or because the men protecting her fought for her
>>

It's called ''good writing'' and does not rely on epin story twists at the end of the episode to keep the audience engaged like Lost, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones

Were the last couple of seasons of Mad Men kind of weak or was it just me? Mad Men is a show I started off not enjoying that much for the first season or so, but then I got hooked on it around the end of season 2 and then got to a place where I was reallying enjoying it and marathoned all the way to the end of season 5.

The last 2 seasons though I was basically just watching them out of obligation and not really retaining much of what had happened between seasons. I might have appreciate later Mad Men more if it was there for me to marathon while I still had momentum. I think I had just moved on at that point.

It was the episodic case of the week stuff I meant. I don't think I could be bothered to go through all that again. I liked the case of the week stuff because the characters put aside their vendettas and rivalries for a moment for the greater good of their neighborhood. It makes sense that cops juggle multiple cases like that, especially a place as busy as Farmington. You could argue that there was too much, but there are several that also fleshed out the characters, like pic related and how it gave Vic more context as a character.

Pretty much every show is a classic or an underrated treasure. HBO is a shell of its former glory, especially their dramas.
>>
>>63075915
Deadwood S2 was utter garbage though, first half at the very least.
>>
>>63075903
The final season was a complete disaster of safe fan pandering that made the entire show look worse in retrospect. When you watch the show the first time you give it the benefit of the doubt and assume there is some kind of plan in place, maybe not specific plot stuff but a general greater point to the progression of the characters, but given the terrible way the show wraps up its obvious they had no idea what kind of show they were even making. It was a decently convincing impression of a quality show for the first few seasons at least.

For me, keeping Gus for the entire 4th season was a mistake. The whole season feels like a slog to the sole logical conclusion. It was still slightly entertaining but too much. But then the 5th season instantly shot itself in the foot with the retarded flashforward. The writers had to invent the terrible Nazi villains so Walt could use that big gun looking like a hero. A total fuckup on the writers' part.

Breaking Bad ended in a similar way House did for me, emotionally attached wise, it simply allowed you move on, never to think about again, albeit BrB embracing fan service in an attempt for semi-fireworks.
>>
>>63076034
I thought the Gus season was entertaining television at the time but it completely derailed the show. It stopped being focused on Walter White's character and became Walter White vs Big Bad of the season. When it finally wrapped that up it was obvious the the writers didn't really know where to go so season 5 is like a mess of scenes that the writers thought the fanbase would find cool.

I thought Granite State was a major disappointment. It didn't pack anywhere near the emotional punch it was supposed to for me. Maybe it would have been better if the entire episode was from Walter's perspective and you really got a sense of how pathetic and bored he was in that Cabin. Season 5 in general was just too damn rushed. You saw the framework of what they wanted to do but they rushed through it so much that none of it had any impact. The last two episode should have been feature length.

It might have melodramatic moments but it's an action comedy for the most part, 'tard. Whereas madmeng, yeah, full blown melodrama.

It's a laughably bad show and you should probably stab whoever tricked you into watching it. If you make it to S2 I guarantee S2E1 will make you laugh at the awful

well meme'd

>"We're selling the company!" = Melodrama
>"We're going to melt his corpse in acid!" = Not melodrama.
Goddamn it /tv/, one of these days...
>>
>>63077680
Breaking Bad is full blown melodrama. Cliffhangers, plot twists, characters yelling out their feelings, explosions. It's the biggest example of melodrama on television.
>>
>>63077736
If it has edgy subject matter that makes your fedora twitch then it's not melodrama.
>>
>>63077736
Oh, did I say melodrama? I meant boring as all fuck
>>
>>63077547
The Wire starts off slow, they're mostly establishing all the characters, gang/police inner workings. It picks up after a few episodes

>better than LOST
Not setting a high bar.
>>
>>63077587
Yeah I gave it up after one season. I did like it, especially the last few episodes, but I didn't love it. And seeing how a lot of people talk about season 2 being worse, I see no point in continuing a show that I only found mildly entertaining and is going to just get worse.
>>
Shouldn't Rick be on there instead of McNulty? I thought TWD is one of the biggest dramas currently on TV, and The Wire wasn't super popular.
>>
>>63077808
Starts off slow and boring. Continues slow and boring. Then you get to the end and stare at all the reddit upvotes the show has and look at the high metacritic score until you trick yourself into thinking that you watched something good when in reality what you watched was pure shit.

Then you recommend it to the next poor unsuspecting sap and pass the boredom on to then and so the "the wire is good" meme lives on.
>>
>>63077736
What's a good word for a boring ass drama then?
All joking aside it'd be nice to have a word for that

The Wire isn't even close to as popular among normies as the other 3 desu
>>
The Wire had horrible ratings and even critics didnt like it, it only got attention years later after it was over and became some sort of cult classic, you either love it or hate it. S02 was god awful and I bet lots of people dropped it in there, even I had a hard time going thru it, then 3 and 4 were GOAT, and 5 was ok.

Sopranos is easily #1 GOAT

GoT is still going and has potential to join the elder god tier.

Breaking Bad is ok, losses its charm after the 1st watch, terrible for rewatches.
>>
>>63078315
The Wire is more normie than Sopranos now desu

>I call things I don't like buzzwords.
You are a literally a meme yourself. By calling it a meme you're either calling it good or calling yourself shit.
>>
>>63078413
every time I rewatch The Wire, S2 gets better and better and S3/S4 seem more preachy and boring
>>
If these shows got negative reviews or struggled to get enough views to warrant season renewals then you guys would all unanimously be singing high fucking praises for each of them.

This is no doubt the big four of television.
For the record, this isn't based on personal taste, but acclaim.

These two criteria are mutually exclusive, OP. based on
>was never a phenomenon like
Lost would be #1 (barf)
based on
>acclaim
#1 might be something like I LOVE LUCY

sorry, OP. try better next thread.

It shits on Game of Kucs and is the most popular drama on TV.

No one gave a shit about The Wire until it came out on DVD and OnDemand. Mad Men would probably be in there before The Wire. But I fixed the pic for you OP.

I legitimately think most of you are contrarians who dislike things for the whole sake of it being popular.
If you were in Elizabethan times you would call people plebs for liking Shakespeare

season 4 of the wire is the greatest season of television. I still think about that scene with duquan inserting the needle into his veins to this day

Season 6 of Sopranos is the greatest season of television and elevated the show to high art. Something I can't say for any other American show.
