Independent films, like "Whiplash" and "Fargo" are being left by the wayside. Stellar performances, stellar sound boarding and editing. But if it's something unconventional and artistic, like Birdman, you really need about 4 breaks otherwise your mind will wander and you will lose track of what is happening.

It's best to just take it in all at once even if it does fry your brain just to preserve the overall effect of the movie. You can always go back and watch the coolest scenes and work out what happened in the parts you didn't understand with a plot synopsis later.
I watched Victoria the other day which was over 2 hours long, I was so anxious and overloaded with information that I was writhing around in my chair and even pacing around the room by the final 30 minutes but I'm glad I took it in all at once because if you lose momentum in a film like that it's hard to go back to.
