Series 8 was fucking dreadful, with the exception 4. And that book episode is seriously one of the shittiest episodes of the entire show - Utterly forgettable, just like the Christmas ep from Series 7. Depressingly bad. I can believe the changes to Jeremy and Super Hans’ characters - it’s pretty realistic that they would mature a bit and get more interested in forming careers. But, Mark just wouldn't fall for a scam like that. He doesn't believe in good stuff happening for him. A more realistic storyline for him would be not actually believing in a real publishing deal, being rude or dismissive to the publisher, and thus fucking it up for himself. Mark’s sudden stupidity seemed a bit of a stretch, and just as I was thinking it was a rehash of Consultio/Consultius there was even a mention of Johnson taking Mark’s £2,000- it was even the same amount, which just made it seem even lazier.
And even though I wasn't ever really fond of Dobby's character, it was weird how they basically demolished her and rebuilt her from an awkward nerd into a trendy hipster. Going back to series 8 as a whole, there was the odd decent moment but I really struggled to give a shit about the show. There was a lot of same-old stuff in there that the writers leaned on in the absence of genuine ingenuity. During episode 3 & 4, I briefly thought they would be building an arc where Jeremy and Dobby grow close, while Mark and Hans as co-workers do likewise. Instead, it just treaded water. Every time they make some sort of progress, they falter and stumble back. Everything just feels so weird and inconsequential.
