Watched it like 50 times and I think I've got a pretty good idea about what's going on, but it's getting old. It's kinda cheesy to be honest.

A crazy sex cult for the super powerful and most of them just watch? So they have some kind of voyeur fetish? Pretty tame. All the chicks are thin and white. I would hope a real life illuminati secret sex party would be much more interesting, with the highest ranking members wearing their masks while sodomizing Japanese and Mexican virgins. Obviously, Dan Schneider would be there getting sucked off by a tween while sucking on another tween stars toes. Quentin Tarantino would get in on the toe sucking too, and Juno would stop being a lesbian for a couple hours if you have her enough cash and movie roles.
>>
>>63056246
It's the exact same type of shot he used in The Shining with those calumet cans. I looked it up, there's no board game called magic circle. Wikipedia says it's the thing wiccans draw pentagrams and sigils in.

I thought it was a decent thriller the first time I saw it, tense and eerie

Then I looked into the symbolism and got really spooked by all the subtle occult themes. Add to that the fact that Kubrick died after making it and I can honestly say it's one of the scariest films I've ever watched
>>
Fucking phenomenal, an underrated masterpiece.

Right? You'd think the last words of a great artist would be more profound than that.

> or maybe the act of fucking actually has a profound meaning that matches the gravity of it being Kubrick's final message to us
>>
>>63057059
Kubrick was telling us to fuck and make babies. Because life is the ultimate art form, and sex is the most ultimate natural high. Kubrick had 3 children.
>>
>>63056510
He was more enchanted. If they didn't tell him to fuck off he would've been in that mansion every night.

Not that it matters though because the whole plot is really just a metaphor for exploring the darker side of one's own sexuality.

>>
>>63056010
the first time I watched it I was just flicking through channels and had no idea what it was about

>>
>>63057375
He's the gateway director to most budding film nerds because he's the most intellectual and artsy of the New Hollywood directors. Try getting a teenager into cinema by showing him Tarkovsky and see how far that gets you.
>>

Like it's often pointed out that Eyes Wide Shut is his wake up call to people and exposing the Illuminati, the finale line of the movie means
>Fuck, they're not gonna let me get away with this.
>>
>>63056010
Are Free Masons the same as Illuminati and do they enjoy this movie? Are they Offended by it?

I remember when I worked at a graduate college and on the weekends there would be one or two classes even though the campus was closed and the people who attended them looked so bazaar. The students looked so different from each other. One student would have torn jeans and a torn jean jacket with grease and dirt on them. The next student would be a police officer and on the other side of the police officer their would be a guy that looed like a business man etc etc. One thing they had in common is they all had a Freemason emblem on there car. This would only happen on the weekends.
>>

Masons are like the bouncy castle of occult lodges.
Its to keep the goyim busy while the real lodges do all kinds of awful shit.
>>

>>
I didn't really like it and that is due to 2 things. The first is that Tom Cruise always looks like Tom Cruise to me, I cannot see him as a character only as an actor playing a character.
The other thing was I was kind of expecting more, it is just a simpler version of Salo, whose director also died suspiciously and they are both about the rich and powerful being corrupt and abusing their wealth and power.
>>
>>63057225
Yeah, and most of them are either milling about or leaning against a wall having a look.

They are stupid. It's like David Icke claiming there was blood everywhere and shit like that, but then the second half of the movie wouldn't make any sense.

Do you think that fucking dude with a little daughter would react as calmly if there was kiddie diddling or snuff at the party? Come one. Also the dialog at the end with Victor talking about it being a show to scare him wouldn't make sense if there were literally kids being molested right in front of him. It's just stupid.

There apparently was stuff cut though. Originally Kubrick intended to have some part of the bhaghavad gita chanted during the orgy, but after he died some hindu defense force got pissed.

One complaint I have is that the street scenes that are supposed to be in NYC are clearly a sound stage and not in NYC. I have the same complain about FMJ. Some say that this was intentional on SK's part - an attempt to create a sense of something being slightly off, not unlike the design of the hotel in TS. For me it just took me out of the film, if only briefly.

It's a ritual sacrifice cult. The cult shows their power in getting away with murder publicly in front of everyone with the help of a cadre of elite and influential people.

"Beauty queen dies of drugs overdose" in a prominent newspaper. It's right in front of everyone.
>>
Z:Suppose I told you...
...that everything that
happened to you there...
...the threats, the girl's warnings...
...her last-minute intervention...
...suppose I said that all of that...
...was staged.
That it was a kind of charade.
That it was fake.
B:Fake?
Z:Yes. Fake.
B:Why would they do that?
Z:Why?
In plain words...
...to scare the living shit out of you.
To keep you quiet
about where you'd been...
...and what you'd seen.
B:Have you seen this?
Z:Yes, I have.
B:I saw her body in the morgue.
Was she the woman at the party?
Z:She was.
The woman lying dead in the morgue...
...was the woman at the party.
Well, Victor, maybe I'm
missing something here.
You called it a fake, a charade.
Do you mind telling me
what kind of fucking charade...
...ends with somebody turning up dead?

Z:Okay, Bill, let's cut the bullshit.
All right?
You've been way out of your depth
for the last 24 hours.
You want to know what kind of charade?
I'll tell you exactly what kind.
That whole play-acted,
"take me" phony sacrifice...
...that you've been jerking off with
had nothing to do with her real death.
Nothing happened after you left
that hadn't happened to her before.
She got her brains fucked out. Period.
When they took her home,
she was just fine...
...and the rest is in the paper.
She was a junkie. She OD'd.
There was nothing suspicious.
Her door was locked from the inside.
The police are happy. End of story.
Listen, Bill, nobody killed anybody.
Someone died. It happens all the time.
But life goes on.
It always does...
...until it doesn't.
But you know that, don't you?
>>
>>63074930
The power to murder people who get in their way and frame it so no one associated with them is tied to it is how they control people. The sex orgies are more like a carrot and the not-so-veiled threat of murder is the stick.

Ziegler was grooming Bill to recruit him into the cult, but Bill had a conscience so he didn't fit. He failed the initiation.

A majority of his best movies are based off of a piece of literature, such as Clockwork Orange, The Shining, 2001, Lolita, Strangelove, FMJ, the list goes on. He's able to add his own little twists and such, but is he able to make his own movie and idea from scratch?

The conspiracy shit is retarded. All the retards who write about how kubrick was telling everyone about illoominati are fucking morons. The movie has a lot of powerful imagery and subtext but it relates more to human consciousness like all his movies then some le deep illoominati conspiracy.

It's intentionally meant to feel dream like, you're unsure about what's real and what isn't. The only scene that doesn't seem to fit in the movie is the scene where the guy he works for opens up and tells him that it was a secret party for high powered people to have sex, it's the least dreamlike and least ambiguous scene in the movie although there is certainly something there it doesn't seem to fit the style of the rest of the film.
>>
>>63083013
It's just an excuse. She probably was a slut anyway but when she smokes weed she has something to take the blame next day.
>>
>>63083103
Nah, the scene is pretty ambiguous. Notice how he always talks some shit and when gets called out he says something like "ok let's cut the bullshit" and makes up more of it. He lied like ten times.
>>

You should think about your post for a while. Something might dawn on you.
>>
>>63083181
You should try not being an idiot for a while. You might realize just how stupid all the Illuminati conspiracy nonsense is.
>>
>>63083161
That doesn't make the scene ambiguous. That's just pure surface dialogue and people lie and bullshit in real life all the time. A character being shady doesn't make an entire scene ambiguous or dream like.

It's ambiguous in the sense that Bill doesn't know if it was a dream or if there was something real to it. The dream basically ended with the death of the model and Bill is unsure if it's connected. Victor for that matter pretends it was just a dream.

>>63083366

But whether the character is lying or telling the truth on the matter of what happened doesn't even really matter. The entire movie is an exploration of his own sub-conscious, in particular the parts that deal with sex and love. Man's primal instincts clashing with his philosophical ideals about how to live life are a common theme in kubrick's films. That scene seems to fall out of that exploration completely for a moment and purely reflect the surface narrative.
>>
>>63083429
>Do you think it was the vaccines that give you autism?

Ha! Not the guy but even though conspiracies do exist I kinda doubt that there is an organization like the illuminati. I imagine something more along the lines of game of thrones where everybody stabs eachother in the back with a few families fucking with eachother. Also a lot of blackmailing.

You can't even bring up any actual points all you can is "no dude just like think man it's like the government is a conspiracy". Try using that pea size little pathetic brain rattling around your empty skull once in your life. You probably think aliens built the pyramids too.
>>
>>63083465
It's still ambigious because it isn't clear if he's lying or not when he says the sacrifice was a playact. There are indicators but Bill isn't sure.
>>
>>63083481
One day you'll figure it out.
>>
>>63083498
But that's surface narrative anon....I feel like you're not getting this, surface narrative isn't important. Surface narrative isn't ambiguous...

Whether he's lying or not is completely irrelevant and whether he was telling the truth or not doesn't make it ambiguous or every movie with a character who lies about anything is ambiguous.
>>
>>63083526
The surface narrative is ambiguous, that's the point.

Okay..but it still doesn't fit in with the style and themes of the rest of the movie. It has lost it's dreamlike quality and the subtext and primal imagery is gone. The scene splits off from the deeper ambitions of the movie and the style is much more mundane.
>>
>>63083553
You should totally do that. Like first thing Monday morning.

um...Fidelio? oh wait, not this kinda thread.

So is inception, it's still about as deep as a rain puddle. Just having surface level ambiguity of not knowing everything that has or will happen isn't meaningful in anyway.
>>
>>63083633
I'd be dissapointed if you did.
>>
>>63083654
I don't know what you're getting at..that's all surface narrative. If you're saying the movie is just about a guy who has a weird dream and then goes to his boss who tells him the dream was real then you've fundamentally missed the point of the movie.

>>

>>
>>63078007
2001 is not based off a book. The author wrote the book as Kubrick was making the movie. It was separate works about the same story
>>
>>63083706
Of course not but you're just talking about surface narrative stuff...I mean, people disagree on what the deeper meanings kubrick was getting at but it's universally agreed there is more going on then 'a guy had a weird dream, then you know he went around tieing up plot points and found out it was real but maybe the guy lied then it ended'

There is so much more to the movie then that. The dreamlike quality to the movie has nothing to do with the character himself dreaming or not, that's really irrelevant. Whether the model was killed or not is irrelevant.
>>
>>63078007
Holy shit you're so dumb. This has got to be b8.
>>
>>63056469
need a BWREEEEEEE BWREEEEEEE verison of this asap my niggas
>>
>>63083706
you're talking about inception level ambiguity, cinema is about philosophy and human understanding the story is only present as a sort of tonal guide and because kubrick still liked to appeal to mainstream
>>
>>63083738
I didn't mean to say it's literally a dream, but it's one of the themes. Sure, it's on the surface but this doesn't make it irrelevant. During the first part just something happens and the second part is the protagonist trying to make sense of it. Also the dream part in the dialogue refers more to Bill thinking about his wife's dream.
>>
>>63083815
What is the point you're trying to make about the film though. You're throwing out, it was a theme but a theme of what? how is him dreaming in the surface level narrative a theme?

'a character was dreaming then figuring it out' isn't a theme, that's a story and doesn't necessarily have any greater meaning than a guy who goes to the store to buy milk. If you're going to say the surface level isn't irrelevant how does the surface narrative tie into the deeper levels?

If that scene has more ambiguity then just 'the guy might be lying idk no one knows' then what is that ambiguity between?

You don't seem like you're grasping anything beyond the surface narrative of the film.
>>
>>63083812
Can't find the exact quote but during the run of Barry Lyndon Kubrik was amused about whatever the critics would interpret. Like it was supposed to be a story happening in a famous picture or whatever, when it was just an adventure story featuring some irish guy.

I'm not saying that's the case with every Kubrick film but his work is largely like a rorschach test for the watcher. What you're doing is basically what Bill does after his wife said she was about to fuck that Sailor.

You could argue for anything from secret cults, anticaptialism, supressed sexuality, child abduction, scientology, pimps going bald, time travel, or whatever.
>>
>>63083900
hh no Kubrick did not say that, he did say he intends to leave his movies ambiguous but they aren't Rorschach tests like a movie like the master. When asked about his film he said he did have a deeper meaning in mind but left it ambiguous and was intrigued by the various meanings people found in it

you just only understand surface narrative so now you're trying to prove that's the only one in films, stick to nolan tier flicks not cinema.
>>
>>63083815
that isn't a theme dude you sound confused as hell

internal sexual conflict is a theme

a movie having a dreamlike appearance is an aesthetic

>>
>>63083932
So what's the deeper meaning according to you? Like the butterfly wings of the girl represent the monarch brainwashing program and Alice has the shining?

In my opinion it's about a) repressed sexuality and relationships, like supressed gayness and male insecurity b) some yuppy on top of his game throwing money around bribing people, but learns there are always bigger a bigger fish c) some conspiracy shit regarding the fashion industry providing models for orgies (see the newspaper article mentioning some fashion designer and sandor saying he knows some people in the art game and his perference for the rennaissance which explains the customs at the orgy) d) Bill and Nick being mirrors of eachother like the hooker is a mirror of Alice, in the sense where following your desires might lead to, e) dream like feel during the first part and the waking up think during the second part, f) the orgy being itself an aspect of what repressed sexuality might lead to on a larger scale hinting at the dark sides of it
g) alice grooming her daughter to be a whore but it's unclear if she will be repressed or not
>>
Wow this thread went to shit overnight

Can we all just accept that there are lots of ways to interpret this film and leave it at that

That said, there is explicit occult imagery in the orgy scenes. NOTE I AM NOT SAYING THE ILLUMINATI IS REAL, but Kubrick definitely wanted to allude to occult themes. He implies it was more than just a sex party but I think just to mess with the audience

I didn't say what the deeper meaning is in the film actually but your 'deeper meanings' of the film are pure autism and sound like the responses I would get if I asked a 14 year old to come up with deeper meanings to the film.

e) dream like feel during the first part and the waking up think during the second part,
g) alice grooming her daughter to be a whore but it's unclear if she will be repressed or not

These two made me laugh the hardest, thanks anon.

What's the deeper meaning according to you? Do the plot point align with orion or something?
>>
>>63084052
Those all seem weirdly specific and surface narrative oriented.

Ambiguity is for instance about the internal conflict between the philosophical/cultural ideal of love coming into conflict with the primal and instinctual part of our conscious more responsible for sex. The film seems to explore this concept, delving into how these two parts of our conscious interact. You could take away many, many more specific ideas about what that interaction means or some kind of purpose or draw a completely different deeper meaning about the film but 'dream like feel during the first part then waking up think during the second part' isn't a deeper meaning..that's nothing.

I'm not saying you have to agree with my personal take on the film and how scenes fit into that but if all you have is 'alice's daughter was a whore really' then I can confidently say you didn't grasp the film.

You don't get it. Kubrick's movies are like onions rather than apples. There are layers, true, but if you take those away you're left with nothing. Repressed sexuality sums the movie up pretty well imho.
>>
>>63084208
I was thinking that maybe if you write down the plot points on paper you'll get a star constellation, hinting at the homeworld of those alien shapeshifters higher up the cult hierarchy.
>>
>>63084212
Repressed sexuality is a part of what I described, the conflict between the philosophical ideal of love and monogamy coming into conflict with primal lust and sexuality. What you said about apples and onions meaningless.

You talk all that shit about surface level and when called out upon whatever deep meaning you figured you come up with something about repressed sexuality. The protagonist gets blue balled like 4 times in the movie and it literally ends with his wife stating they need to fuck. That's the fucking surface narrative you stupid momo and not some deeper insight into the human condition. Jesus Christ!

If anything the deepest thing about the movie are the hints at earlier movies.
