I thought they were entertaining. That's it really. An Unexpected Journey was quite good, but they got shittier and shittier.
I think Jackson got a bad case of Lucas Syndrome, I'm not sure what went wrong, but the effort and motivation was seriously lacking in every aspect of the Hobbit. Originally Jackson didn't even want to do it, it was Del-Toro, so Jackson probably went into it lacking the real desire in his heart. So he turned to green screen, and more green screen, and chugged his way through. I just watched some behind the scenes for Fellowship and Jackson said himself that this will be the first and last time he'll ever take on a continuous trilogy of that magnitude.
Plus, I'm sure the mediocrity of his career after LOTR dampened his spirits a bit. Just like Lucas.
It should have stayed as a two parter with Del-Toro directing. I think we would have gotten a much more fun film.

the first two hobbits are still worth the watch minus the last 15-20 min of Desolation which was garbage. It actually gets good again from the start of 5 armies up about until the actual fighting starts, then it gets all bloated and cringey with bad cgi, and lack of consequences or things to care about.
