Definitely one of those rare instances where the adapted art form truly and objectively does outweigh the original media in all qualitative matters regarding character and development alteration on the director's part. Kubrick won, King. He made your shit novel into an epic out of his first and only foray into the unknown forces of the supernatural.

The hotel had an evil power that energized the dark, flawed, side of the main character. Kubrick was more subtle about it than King.

It's worse than you think. Danny is insufferable, the Mary Sue girl is the most Mary Sue character ever, alcoholism is brought up every other paragraph, and the bad guys are psychic vampires who travel the country in RVs.

I hated all of it.

The guys from Salem's Lot and The Dark Tower novels?

Say what you will but at least King is committed to his lore now. I got a little tingly reading 11/22/63 when the protag goes to Derry and meets Beverly and Richie
>>
>>63055078

>The guys from Salem's Lot and The Dark Tower novels?

No. They're just fucking gypsies and "the shining" is a tangible thing that they can absorb to live longer.

And the Derry shit in 11/22/63 was totally unnecessary. Good book, except for the end. Which is just standard King.
>>
>>63055098
>And the Derry shit in 11/22/63 was totally unnecessary.
Absolutely agree. Pure fanservice and I loved it anyway.

Ending was shit, would have liked some exploration of the "ripped" world.
>>
>>63055118

And I know he mostly does horror but would it have killed him to give us a slightly happier ending? Though the ending we got was actually written by his son, I guess the original was even worse.
>>
>>63047258

>>

Fuck off britbong with your different numbers.

Also I really didn't think of James Franco as the lead when reading the book. Definitely expected someone more plain and average.
>>
>>63050809

Then who opened the locked door bitchboy?
>>
>>63055472
Agree on that Franco thing. Another one I liked was the one about writing. And Salems Lot, the only horror book that actually frightened me a little
>>
He wasted his life on his bitchy wife and is probably being keked by the nigger.
>>
>>63055503

Well just like Shining they needed a current popular big name actor to sell the show, so Franco was it.
>>
>>63048921
The themes are completely different in King's novel. The film is about a man who as others have said already hates his family simply snapping with irrelevant psychic shit going on the background for spook factor.

The novel is about an otherwise loving but flawed father being taken over by the will of the hotel and having his personality slowly degrade into an entirely different person by the end. The book does well for following along his tortured inner thoughts as he loses more and more of himself while the hotel comes to life thanks to Danny's gift. You really feel sorry for the guy and his family.

Nicholson seems like a scumbag from act 1.
>>
All work and no blay make jack a bull boy.
>>
>>63055898

Kubrick has no nuance. Jack is the bad guy, that's it.

Danny did.
>>
>>63056632
what, when, how?
>>
>>63056669

Danny blacks out frequently. "Tony" takes control during that time.

Tony is Anthony, his middle name and the name of Jack's father. The cycle keeps going.
>>
>>63056741

We on the first page nigga.
>>
>>63056732
But why wouldnt Jack kill Danny right after he let him out?
>>
>>63048921
I bet you're judging the book off that nostalgia critic review of the cheap adaptation that starred Based Weber. Can't get more pleb than you.
>>
>>63056756

Jack loved Danny. I know it's bringing in book shit but near the end he smashes his own face in with the mallet so that Danny won't think of him anymore and will flee.

The movie really dropped the ball on the deeper themes of the book.
>>
>>63056788
I read the book actually. Liked how Kubrick added some stuff that only book readers would understand, like when Jack was studying that newspaper cutout album. On the other hand, saw the movie first and liked the movie a little more. Maybe I will just reread and judge again
>>
>>63056732
>Danny BLACKS out frequently
Who wouldn't if the only black bull left?
>>
>>63056829

The movie has great imagery but it really lacks the depth of the book. Jack's constant torment of wanting to do a good job and write the book versus his love for Danny is super gripping. Jack is a flawed person with real problems that are simply exacerbated by the hotel, while the movie makes him very one dimensional.

>>

>>

>>63057411

So the best we can say is "The movie is good on it's own but not a good adaptation." Which is not satisfying in any regard.
>>
>>63057430
The thing that bothered me most about the movie was the fact that Nicholson looked insane straight from the beginning. The thing that bothered me about the book the most was probably the translation, plus the animals. Eventually I will re-read the book in english, so I have a better idea.
>>
>>63057469

On the first part I agree. King went to great lengths to establish Jack as a normal well meaning guy who suffered from several problems, the movie discarded this.

I can't comment on translations, I only speak my native English.
>>
>>63057524
Yeah, the translation problem is not a thing to be discussed here really.

He was abandoned totally. Like the Donner Party before him. Winter was coming the Meager coverings he used to evade detection AKA his wife and son were no longer paramount the coming enveloping snow. He had everything he needed now and the meager trapping fell away, leaving his true self un evaded. There had been moments before but was quickly quelled with drink.
>>
>>63058185
sure, agreed. loved the whole feeling of the movie. Movie- some things better explained, Brooks and other supporting characters, Book- deeper, longer
>>
>>63052327
Dead Zone.
>>
>>63055898
child abuse and it's persistence among generations is a big part of the novel
shit like the wasps nest shows that there is plenty of nastiness lurking within Jack.

But you're right, the hotel does subsume him, showcased by a swell finale where Jack smashes his own face in with a roque mallet to show his identity is completely gone. I like it better than the film ending, which was at least thematically similar; jack's icy petrification showed he was part of the hotel along with all the other ghosts and decorations
