Americans sit through upwards of 20 minutes, sometimes as much as 30, of trailers. The trailers don't even start until the listed showtime. Assuming you arrive the normal 15-20 minutes early to the movie, you will sit through ads then as well. The applause is because the audience has just sat through 45 minutes of marketing content and they're finally getting what they paid money for.
