I just found a DVD of Mad Max 2 and since I've never seen it i was planning on to doing so, question is, is it mandatory to watch the first one first?

The first movie is good if you care about the origin story. It has a different vibe because there is still some society. It is much slower paced than the 2nd and 4th. Still like it better that thunderdome.

It was received somewhat negatively by hardcore fans in Australia because it was more "Hollywood-ised".
Apart from that no, not really. For a third film it's pretty good. In my opinion it's first half is infinitely better than it's second, the first half retains the gritty, surreal and immoral side of the Mad Max universe, while the second half gets a substantial bit lighter.
Watch them chronologically, it just means you'll not have to make a chore out of going back to watch the first one or the third one.
the first two mad maxes are a lot like alien and aliens. the first is a great atmospheric slow movie that kicks into high gear at the end, the second is a big fun action movie. so in short, the first is patrician and the second is for plebs
